Prostitution is vastly different in Thailand to the west or anywhere really.

In the west its just another entertainment service that you can pay for even with a credit card.

In Thailand its a survival occupation that supports a huge percentage of the population particularly in the Northeast.

Prostitution is a major component of Thailand's foreign currency income and vital  tourism industry.

Its also responsible for bringing in billions of baht in revenue from hundreds of thousands of Isaan &korat girls who work overseas as sex workers and live with ageing foreign husbands.

You can't legalize prostitution because then you would have to tax it and prices would rise.

How can the gov collect tax from hundreds of thousands of girls who are paid in baht only and by a nasty boss or foreign sex tourist?

You can't. Total shambles.

Nothing changes here except the faces.

I have no problem with women that want to work in the sex industry as long as it is of their own free will and are able to leave anytime they choose.  There still do exist women that are forced/sold into it and are basically slaves.

There is NO prostitution in TH - how they have a prostitution law ?

Contrary: if there is a prostitution law, there MUST be prostitution in TH

The fact that so many officials deny it exists here tells you everything you need to know about this place.

Thailand is the world’s largest brothel. There’s no hiding it. Everyone in the world knows it.

Yes and the reason they deny it is pretty obvious.

Provide no welfare, dont look after their own in any way.

Of course they dont want to acknowledge that they themselves more or less force the unfortunate/uneducated into prostitution to survive.

Thai PBS reports that Law lecturer Akawat Laowonsiri says Thailand is obliged to protect the rights of sexworkers

Hang on....

Which is it?

The powers that be keep saying that there is no evidence of prostitution when they check en masse.

And now they are saying they are obliged to protect their rights....

Did it all start with the Vietnam war, Pattaya was an R&R destination?

Obviously not, since lasciviousness is and always has been DNA endemic to Thai nationals as well as entrepreneurship, i.e., finding ways to make your money their money. :w00t:  Yes, prostitution certainly flourished during the Vietnam War—nationwide—not just in Pattaya, which was then only a small port that hosted brief US Navy R&R stops.  Don't forget there were also 7 Thai air force bases that became, essentially, USAF bases supporting the war effort.  None of those large bases suffered from a lack of bars and bargirls. :partytime2:

I was a young USAF G.I. stationed at Ubon RTAFB in 1972-73 and can confirm that prostitution was alive and well... and dirt cheap.  IIRC an all-nighter in Ubon area cost a whopping 100 baht ($5 USD at 20baht/$). ????   Sadly, the Thai ladyboy 'phenomenon' was as prolific back then as it is today.  Some things never change. ????

Thailand’s prostitution laws out of step with reality

As are most other laws.

But in the case of prostitution how can they up date a law & pass it through parliament when top officials say it doesn't exist?

That would make them all liars!

a working girl or boy has a right to offer a service and people have a right to engage those services -  end of story.

About right..

You ask any of them.

Especially the one you have just picked up in the bar.

"Just a <deleted> for money, not mean anything "

"Except for you...."

DO IT........or stop talking about it~!!

Eliminate all prostitution in Pattaya, give Pattaya a total renovation from Sukhumvit to the Beach Rd and make it a world class beach resort area.

But seeing as how that will be more than a TRILLION BHAT or multiple trillions, I have a better chance of getting pregnant than that ever happening.

can you really crack down in 1 or 2 bars in a city of 2500+ bars and make a difference?

You do the math? !

All countries must develop a situation where people with or without an education can survive and have at least limited success. if the country removes a large number of jobs, then they need to make sure the replaced people can get employment elsewhere. For example, USA want to go to Medicare for all. Seems easy to do but maybe a million people might become unemployed at insurance companies and doctor/hospital staffs. In other words, develop the economy to give people alternatives. until you do that then manage the situation knowing people are trying their best to help their families...and, remember, they are citizens of the country.

Bogus comment.

Many people get by on the minimum wage.

Also, they basically get free health care which is a huge ( looking after their own) as opposed to the wonderful land of opportunities the great USA.

More correctly they do not want to admit that every lunchtime many go for their appointments with expensive places where their needs are met, plus many many officials have Mia Nois who are by definition Prostitutes under a different name !

That is just a myth, Pattaya did become a haven for GI's during WW2 and set the course for what it is today. However prostitution has been around for 1000s of years on every corner of the earth including Thailand! Thailand would like to blame prostitution on us westerners, the reality is we make up about 10% of the customer base!

Where did you read that? Not WW II, it was the Vietnam war. When WW II happened, Pattaya was just a little fishermen village and GI's came here for recreation.

America had been in Laos even before the Vietnam war and many airports, Ubon Ratchatani, U-Tapao are just two of them, including some bridges, for example the "Friendship Bridges" in Mukdahan and Nong Khai, etc were built by America. I've met some women who've worked for the Americans in certain areas.

?Pattaya was a fishing village until Nick Ahnat Wuethrich arrived there and open all the gogo bars in Walking street with Wäespi. Then, during the Vietnam War, American servicemen stationed at nearby U-Tapao or other US bases in Thailand began visiting Pattaya. One story, unverified by a reliable source, notes that it all started when a group of 500 American soldiers stationed at the military base in Korat were driven to Pattaya on 29 June 1959 for a week of rest and relaxation. They rented several houses at the south end of the beach from a prominent Thai, Lord Sunthorn. Despite their short stay, the soldiers had a great time and raved about the place. The word spread among other American soldiers stationed in the region and Pattaya quickly became a hot alternative to Bangkok.

I liked the Statement Thailand's Prostitution Laws are out step with Reality. A more honest Statement would be Thailand is out of step with Reality. The Cart is Dragging Horse instead  of The Horse Dragging both The Cart and Thailand. When the Fish Begins to Stink it Begins at The Head . Start at Government Head and Work Down not the Reverse Direction. Even your Car will go Faster in Forward than Reverse.

And the areas of Bangkok that are Thai-only have far more prostitutes working in them (and better-looking ones too) than the farang areas.

I wonder if there's a slight chance any of Thailand's other laws might be out of step with reality?
