Lottery fever grips the village as home made rocket goes through pick-up windscreen

Locals in a north eastern Thai village have been queuing up to buy lottery tickets after a home made rocket went through the windscreen of a pick up at a festival.

The five inch diameter, 3 meter PVC pipe with ten meter tail rocket had come down in a tree at the Rocket Festival (Bun Bang Fai) held in Suwannaphum district of Roi-Et.

Ban Don Khaen "phoo yai baan" Bunthan Waiphat said that the incident happened on the second and last day of the festival on Tuesday.

There had been 28 giant rockets set off over the two days and everyone was heading off home in a rain storm.

Officials had diverted traffic away from a tree where one large rocket had landed but one man did not hear the warning and the rocket became dislodged and went though his windscreen.

Luckily the organizers of the event had insurance and the Isuzu pick-up owner received 30,000 baht compensation.

Bunthan said they would all be more careful next year.

But he added that the locals were all buying lottery tickets with two numbers - 27 for the number of the rocket and 516, the last three digits of the pick-up licence plate.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Rocket Festivals are held all over the north-east. There is a tradition to "wake-up" the God of Rain, Phayathaen, to send precipitation for the rice planting season.

This was the second accident reported in the North-East this year after a spectator died earlier when a rocket being prepared for lift-off exploded into a crowd.

Impossible without Lhao Kao.

Amazing Thailand, the organisers obviously failed Risk Management 101

Banned in Buriram Province. Too dangerous and cuts out gambling.

Sounds like a Thai Apollo with no satnav .. And as they are quite good at crashing on the roads no surprise this crashed as well ..
