A dugong found beached in Krabi’s Klong Thom district has been rescued and sent to a nearby marine biological centre to recover.

Sitthichai Bor Muang, head of Ban Bor Muang village in Tambon Sap Khao, was alerted by local residents at 4pm Monday that a dugong had been found on the beach.

Sitthichai said villagers helped carry the dugong back to the sea but it swam back to the beach. They then used vinyl boards to trap enough seawater for the dugong to rest and took turns to watch over it until help arrived.

The rescued dugong is a male measuring about one metre in length and weighing some 40 kilogrammes. It appears to be about one-year-old and has five shallow wounds on its back.

A villager called the Phuket Marine Biological Centre, which collected the marine animal and is now treating it at the centre.

Nice to hear some good news for a change - hope it recovers and manages to stay away from the cooking pot!

A kinda nice report showing caring people and only one comment in 2 weeks. Then people cannot drink alcohol for 24 hours at a buddhist holiday and you have 5000 comments in 24 minutes...
