Results at the end of Day One at the Brands International in Bangkok

US Scrabble player Jesse Day led the field after day one of the Brand's International tournament at the Central Westgate shopping center in Bang Yai, Bangkok.

Jesse - last year's world championship runner up in London - won all eight games on Thursday.

In second place was Chiang Mai physician Dr Jakkrit Klaphajone at 7-1 and in third was Akshay Bhandarkar of the UAE on 6-2.

Tournament favorite and undisputed greatest player of all time Nigel Richards of New Zealand could manage only 15th place with a 5-3 record.

Gerry Carter's 433-388 fourth round victory against Nigel Richards of New Zealand

The reigning world champion lost consecutive games against Helen Gipson of Scotland, Jesse and Thailand's Gerry Carter (this game is featured in a picture with this story).

Thailand's highest rated player at the event, Komol Panyasophonlert, is also on 5-3 in 18th place.

Helen is in the top ten at 6-2 after beating Gerry (5-3) in the final game of the day.

There are a total of 29 games and a three game final on Sunday between the top two.

Saturday will feature a parade of nations before a representative of the Thai Royal Family.

Scrabble is very popular in Thailand and thousands of school children will join the event at the weekend in student divisions.

The tournament - known generally as the King's Cup - is sponsored by chicken essence firm Brand's and is considered to be the most iconic event on the international Scrabble calendar.

"carries his bat"

Curious. Is this an obscure idiom (British?)

or reference to an emotional support animal?

it means undefeated...from cricket, not having given up one's wicket.

Who is Thailand's Gerry Carter? He must be pretty good to beat a world champ. Perhaps all will be revealed in the next installment of Rooster's TWTWIT on Saturday.

Well there is the old joke.

My brother once bowled a maiden over and she got up and punched him on the nose. OK I'll leave now.
