Thaksin planning new party "Pheu Dharma", says source

Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will establish a new political party in the near future and then relinquish control of the Pheu Thai Party (PTP) to trusted lieutenant Khunying Sudara Keyuraphan, according to a PTP source.

The highly placed source said the new party, possibly to be called Pheu Dharma, would have both veterans and new faces from Thaksin’s inner circle among its members.

The Pheu Dharma leader could be Sompong Amornwiwat, only recently elected to lead PTP, and would likely have Anudit Nakhonthap as secretary-general, the source said.

Other members would be drawn from the disbanded Thai Raksachart Party, from among MPs not barred from politics by the Election Commission.

Among other possible members are Thaksin’s former Cabinet ministers in various party incarnations, such as Plodprasop Surassawadi, who once headed natural resources, former finance minister Kittirat Na Ranong, and former PM’s Office minister Chusak Sirinil.

The source said Thaksin’s decision to form Pheu Dharma apparently stemmed from his fear of PTP yielding ground to the rising Future Forward Party (FFP).

He is seen as sharing similar political ideas with FFP but does not have control over it.

Thaksin-affiliated parties have seen FFP gain popularity in their strongholds in the North and Northeast, where FFP is intensively campaigning with a view to future municipal and local administrative elections, the source said.

The source was speaking on condition of anonymity on Sunday, the 14th anniversary of the founding of Thai Rak Thai, Thaksin’s original party.

The source Thaksin would give Sudarat the title of PTP party president, having made Sompong its leader just last Friday.

The junta has really got under his skin, hasn't it? While I would welcome any effort to get rid of this military's influence, it can never involve this corrupt parasite. Thaksin can still capture headlines, but he carries too much baggage - anyway he'll be defanged at every step by the military.

A bit late?

"Mr Wallop is a former MP for Nan representing the People Power Party, Pheu Thai's previous incarnation. He registered Pheu Dharma with the Election Commission on Aug 23, 2010"

Thaksin planning new party

Splendid idea. More political parties are badly needed. Maybe he should consider forming another three of four. In the most recent simulated election there were only seventy some odd parties. Clearly the people of a progressive, autocratic, psuedo-democracy deserve a much wider range of choices.

The hypocrite doesn't stop, when the Thai people tell him to stay where he is and not to get involved in Thai politics all the time!

Wallop Supariyasilp, a former MP for Nan who represented the People Power Party, a previous Pheu Thai incarnation, meanwhile already offered to take in Pheu Thai members in case of the party’s dissolution into his Pheu Dharma Party. The Constitutional Court additionally ordered all 416 MPs who voted in support of charter amendment draft to justify their decision.

This party exists since 2010 or so?? How is this any news here??

How about some real journalism??

In Hinduism, 'Dharma' means 'duty', 'virtue', 'morality', and it refers to the power which upholds the universe and society.

But in Thaksinism, 'Dharma' probably stands for 'incapable of letting go', 'making the same mistakes again', 'continue playing politics at all cost', and 'relying on the same bunch of lackeys and sycophants although they have proven in the past to be neither dutiful, nor virtuous, nor moral'.

Wonderful choices.

The former seriously suggested "tying up 1,000 boats in the Chao Phraya with their propellers running at full speed so flood waters can be 'pushed out' to sea", turned Chiang Mai's Night Safari into a gourmet restaurant for people who enjoy eating endangered wildlife, and - as natural resources minister - performed half naked as an elephant-riding mystical Thai king during one of the most flamboyant over-the-top stage shows this country has ever seen.

The latter, as finance minister in the Yingluck government, admitted in 2012 that he deliberately had lied about a 15 per cent annual export growth figure although he knew that it was grossly exaggerated. When caught out the man had the gall to tell a news conference: "The finance minister needs to lie sometimes to create good feelings. The world knows this as a ‘white lie’. The goal is to create confidence, which in turn benefits the country as a whole.”

He can't and never will let go and neither will his crooked clan. The prize they see is much much too high.

Most Thais will say he was the greatest of any PM's here (and that's not saying much) but his time is gone. He should relax, he and his sister have done so much for Thailand and should let it go they could not beat the Ammart, the dinosaurs and the lackey Establishment and Thais don't seem to care too much. Time will pass, people will die and the young will have a chance.

You're joking right - some nice satire right?

That's doubtful. A couple of times in the past he's been told he can visit China / stay in China but he cannot engage in political stuff from China.
