Thaksin planning new party "Pheu Dharma", says source

Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will establish a new political party in the near future and then relinquish control of the Pheu Thai Party (PTP) to trusted lieutenant Khunying Sudara Keyuraphan, according to a PTP source.

 

The highly placed source said the new party, possibly to be called Pheu Dharma, would have both veterans and new faces from Thaksin’s inner circle among its members.

 

The Pheu Dharma leader could be Sompong Amornwiwat, only recently elected to lead PTP, and would likely have Anudit Nakhonthap as secretary-general, the source said. 

 

Other members would be drawn from the disbanded Thai Raksachart Party, from among MPs not barred from politics by the Election Commission.

 

Among other possible members are Thaksin’s former Cabinet ministers in various party incarnations, such as Plodprasop Surassawadi, who once headed natural resources, former finance minister Kittirat Na Ranong, and former PM’s Office minister Chusak Sirinil.

 

The source said Thaksin’s decision to form Pheu Dharma apparently stemmed from his fear of PTP yielding ground to the rising Future Forward Party (FFP).

 

He is seen as sharing similar political ideas with FFP but does not have control over it.

 

Thaksin-affiliated parties have seen FFP gain popularity in their strongholds in the North and Northeast, where FFP is intensively campaigning with a view to future municipal and local administrative elections, the source said.

 

The source was speaking on condition of anonymity on Sunday, the 14th anniversary of the founding of Thai Rak Thai, Thaksin’s original party. 

 

The source Thaksin would give Sudarat the title of PTP party president, having made Sompong its leader just last Friday.

Actually, I think that in this case they probably do. If it wasn't for the miscalculation in getting a member of the Royal Family involved, the indications were that Thaksin's Thai Raksa Chart party would have polled well in the last election in many seats not traditionally aligned with Phue Thai. FFP took up the slack, and Thaksin and his cronies are running scared at the likelihood of becoming irrelevant in the Thai political scene. This is a last ditch effort to reverse the trend.

He should just enjoy life as he's old and will never get a fair chance in Thailand. Thai politics is not fair. Unless he's doing this as a way to inform, educate and harass or make fools of those with power, he's just wasting his time. If he wrote a tell-all book that described all the corruption and individuals holding back Thailand, he'd have more impact. Of course, like anything truthful it would be banned in Thailand for whatever reasons but it would be out there. Instead of people speculating, the truth could be available. I guess that won't happen as his family is still in Thailand and history shows that they would be a target of the people who don't like the truth to be told.

Today he is a dinosaur, that do not have anything do do with Thailand, more than sitting of his sentence. After that he could be up for consideration. All he does now, is making things worse by interfering with things he at the moment to not own legal right to engage in.

yes, of course he should do a book about everybody else, because him and his familt is probably totally clean from all he would write about.

Splendid idea. More political parties are badly needed. Maybe he should consider forming another three of four. In the most recent simulated election there were only seventy some odd parties. But in Thaksinism, 'Dharma' probably stands for 'incapable of letting go', 'making the same mistakes again', 'continue playing politics at all cost', and 'relying on the same bunch of lackeys and sycophants although they have proven in the past to be neither dutiful, nor virtuous, nor moral'.

this puts to bed the claims he has nothing to do with the ptp  by stating it is his party, isnt this enough reason for the powers that be to close the party down by admitting thaksin owns and runs it, should also make it impossible for him to start a new party as well seeing he is a wanted criminal in Thailand, so much for the ptp telling everyone thaksin was getting out of politics. Wonder if the govt has the balls to actually shut ptp down now they have admitted the truth

He already said on TV interviews that "he's never ever done anything wrong"!! He actually believes that some people are dumb enough to believe him. Perhaps he reads TVF and is encouraged by the Shin fan boy posters who claim he and his clan are innocent - 555!

 

He undoubtedly has details and information that would course some severe embarrassment should he choose to reveal them. But, he knows that if he did, a) all the information held about him and his family would be revealed too and b) the clan would be driven out of Thailand.

 

He has to have more than one political party to counter the number of party list seats/elected seats rules now in force. He or a minion miscalculated last time and the party was dissolved. So he must start a new one. He isn't going to relinquish PTP at all - just be run by one of his proxies. 

 

I thought there were also new rules about crooks, fugitives, influencing political parties, let alone owning them and treating members like employees.

Most Thais will say he was the greatest of any PM's here (and that's not saying much) but his time is gone. He should relax, he and his sister have done so much for Thailand and should let it go they could not beat the Ammart, the dinosaurs and the lackey Establishment and Thais don't seem to care too much. Time will pass, people will die and the young will have a chance.
