Hello everybody!

I am a new member so please bare with me while I get to know the forum better. I was wondering if anybody could please give me some advice/ answer to my queries below.

Background: My father is a 75+ year old person. He lives in Bangladesh. The local doctor back home has suggested him to do a bilateral inguinal hernia surgery. The preference is for laparoscopic surgery unless the doctor advice otherwise.

Queries:

1. Has anybody have any experience of doing a hernia operation in Thammasat University Hospital (which I understand is a government hospital but have private (termed as VIP?) treatment facilities?)

2. Would you be able to suggest any good and economical hospitals (private/ government) for this surgery?

3. I got few quotes from Bumrungrad, Samitivej, Bangkok and BNH hospitals. The price that they have quoted seems to be significantly high. In fact their price seems to be higher than some of the private hospitals in the UK (e.g. BMI)! Does anyone have any experience of negotiating down the price in these Thai hospitals?

Thank you in advance for your help on this.

A government hospital is your best bet but I would suggest one of these over Thammasat:

Ramathibodhi

Chulalongkhorn

Siriraj

Laparoscopic treatment is significantly more costly than open. Even at a government hospital it won't be cheap.

Many thanks for your suggestions, Sheryl!

I don't think 180 is accurate for laparoscopic approach. More like 250 - 350 depending on the hospital.

And given his advanced age he may need more than 1 night stay.

Is there specific reason to do in Thailand?  At his age and living in Bangladesh believe I would be looking at India where prices are likely to be much more reasonable.

If must use a Bangkok private hospital Vejthani Hospital has office in Bangladesh but would not be cheap (although perhaps a little less than those you mentioned).

I was wondering the same thing.   I can't give a specific recommendation but there are supposed to be some international quality private hospitals in Calcutta which would cost far less and sstaff would all speak Bengali.

hello, thanks all for your advice. Does any one have any comments/ experience with Mission hospital? They seem to be slightly cheaper than other private hospitals.

Tried to contact the Government hospitals as Sheryl suggested. But it seems getting any information on the surgery is almost impossible, over the phone, mainly due to language problems. Any suggestions before  we land there?

People in Thailand fly to India to get high quality economical treatment.

You should do there too. Your father will feel at home.

And Sheryl, if money’s important is there any reason not to have the cheaper, open, procedure other than slightly slower healing.

If I’m not mistaken I had the open version in the UK 17 years ago sewing in mesh.

It was really quite uncomfortable for the first movements in the morning, and took a while to heal, but it was nothing the least to be avoided and the good old National Health took us late morning, did four of us one after another and we were discharged a couple of hours after the ops...no overnight stay......a model of efficiency and no problem since.

ps this is an xlnt example of why I am self insured. I can choose to have a much cheaper procedure at the expense of a little discomfort if I choose.,.......though of course in Britain there’s no bill for treatment.....how it should be.

For someone over age 75, like the OP's father, yes there is, lower surgical risks.

For a younger person no, not really.

Consider Malaysia too, such as in KL or Penang. Thailand is geared up to rip off foreigners without mercy, they seem to be charging several times the prices available at international grade hospitals elsewhere. And along with that price gouging the implied unscrupulousness would also make me question the quality of their service and whether it should be trusted. I would also consider Singapore, Tang Tok Seng for example, which is a semi government hospital providing excellent treatment quality but at a lower cost than the more well known private hospitals targeted at the rich and/or foreign.

Has anyone had either of the hernia operations ( Open/Keyhole) recently?

I live near Kumphawapi Hospital haven’t asked if they do the procedure and next closest Udon Thani area. Same distance to

Udon Thani and Khon Kaen. Male 65 years old self pay uninsured

do to heart issues ..  open heart was at 39.

I’ve got a breifing  and pricing for both procedures from BKK. AEK has provided pricing for open and waiting for thier keyhole price.

Any suggestions? Trying to keep price down..

ive had gallbladder surgery in the US a year before keyhole was available. That recovery was much more painful than quad bypass

surgery... one reason I’m hoping I can do th keyhole method.

Thanks appreciate it

Cost (assuming no complicartions) depends on  2 things:

1 - where you have it done (private or govt hospital)

2 - whether open or laparoscopic procedure, at any hospital laparoscopic costs much more, about double.

As you are concerned about cost you should go either to the main government hospital in Udon Thani town or to KKU Hospital (Srinagarind), the second would be best/ Attend the after hours clinic and ask to see one of the acharns in general surgery. Open procedure should be under 40k. Laparoscopic maybe 80 but that's just a guess.

There will be a wait list and waits to see the doctor will also be long.
