Hammond attacks 'terrifying' views of Brexiteer Rees-Mogg

LONDON (Reuters) - British finance minister Philip Hammond said on Wednesday it was “terrifying” that leading Brexit advocate Jacob Rees-Mogg, who could have a role in the next government, thought Britain could be better off by leaving the EU without an exit deal.

 

Hammond, who does not intend to continue as finance minister when a new prime minister is named next week, was responding to criticism from Rees-Mogg - the latest turn in a long-running row that typifies Brexit divisions in the ruling Conservative Party.

 

Hammond has warned that a no-deal exit from the EU could badly damage the British economy. Rees-Mogg, who has been linked with a role in government if fellow Brexiteer Boris Johnson becomes prime minister, argues Britain could be better off.

 

“Happy to debate scale of negative impact of No Deal on the economy - but terrifying that someone this close to a potential future government can think we’d actually be better off by adding barriers to access to our largest market,” Hammond said on Twitter.

 

Rees-Mogg had written in the Daily Telegraph that Hammond’s views were “pure silliness” and said the economic model used to create his warning relied on assumptions that “range from the absurd to the merely dubious.”

 

The spat underlines the huge task that Prime Minister Theresa May’s successor will face to hold together a party that is still deeply split along the “Remain” and “Leave” battle lines drawn during the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Hammond could be terrified that Jacob Rees Mogg is already lined up for the Chancellor job. About time he moved up from the back benches and he’d probably do a better job of it.

the shortest chancellor in history,but he does have a habit of shorting things like many other brexiteers.

Hammond the ultimate Europhile who has done his best from the cabinet to thwart the referendum result and keep the UK in the EU. Besides looking rather like Senator Palpatine from Star Wars and behaving like him, he certainly is a conniving, back stabber who I am looking forward to seeing, getting the boot from the cabinet.

brexit isnt happening and has never been planned for,just watched the faces on TV of BJ and Gove on TV the morning of the result,they looked absolutely terrified ,IT WASNT MEANT TO HAPPEN,and it wont,BJ was in it for personal gain same same Gove,johnson was writing pro remain in the telegraph then pro leave,a total clown of a fella

I don’t doubt many MPs’ are clowns but the U.K. not just the Tory party, needs to find the best of the clowns to lead and move forward.

Hamond will be on the back benches with his mate Grieve in a fortnight, maybe they should all declare their own financial interests in the seriously flawed EU

 

Lets have a leader ballot with only one name on the ticket - that is German French democracy right there - we have been invaded over the last 40 years - slowly the very powerful United Kingdom has been dismantled by France and Germany - how that was ever allowed is a travesty

The nice thing about trade with the EU is it is very one sided - we buy a hell of a lot more than they buy from us.………….you want to test it - go right ahead

 

Farmers in the UK can start supplying the home market which we couldn't do before - our fishing ports and (soon to be) fleets can fish our own waters and keep our own fish and sell into the local market

 

yes it might take time but we will survive and prosper 

 

Time for a leader in the UK that can actually say "NO" to these unelected ass holes in Brussels - they really need to figure out where they are at - the UK is having no more of it, we are leaving, you are no longer dealing with a weak embarrassing  remainer 

 

When we leave watch how France and Germany decide to segregate themselves from the rest - google "two speed Europe" yes they will drop the rest in the s h it when the UK leaves

He moved his Hedge Fund to Dublin and betting against the UK economy in Brexit.

 

 

He needs Brexit to make money on his hedge bets.

Hammond is one of the more odious Remainers. Constantly talking down the UK's chances as he peddles a particularly pessimistic brand of fear.

 

Thankfully we only have to endure another week of him and then Johnson can kick him out of the cabinet with the rest of May's Remain supporting clan. 

 

I'd fully support Rees Mogg in the cabinet. He's a very intelligent individual, mainly disliked because he is from a privileged background and therefore a victim of reverse snobbery.  He is a very successful businessman in his own right, not simply a career politician that wouldn't have a clue how to run a business like so many in Parliament. Boris Johnson has many qualities but attention to detail is not one of them, he needs people like JRM in his team. C'Mon Moggy!!

Rees Mogg is a partner in a fund management company (he stepped down as Chief Exec when he became an MP).

 

You think that company should only be allowed to invest in UK companies? He has a duty to his clients and partners to make sound investment decisions which means diversification. There are easier ways for him to make money than to bet against the UK and then destroy it. I think your tin foil hat needs adjusting if you think Rees Mogg is involved in some secret plot to make a few quid by destroying his country of birth.

He hardly destroyed him. O'Brien got many things wrong during the interview and when Rees Mogg began to point out his mistakes O'Brien cut him off and spoke over the top of him as he always does when presented with facts.

 

O'Brien is the worst type of Remainer. Condescending, rude, patronizing and very often wrong.

In one way he's already brought Britain back to the pre EU days, when the upper class twit bought a commission and ineptly led thousands of men into a war that he benefitted from, and they definitely didn't.  Caring only for his own glory and gains.  All the while playing the patriotism jingle, firing up enough of the rabble to believe that being fed into a mincing machine is so good for them that they forcibly drag anyone who doesn't believe along with them.

I can imagine him, paraphrasing Lloyd-George, speaking to Boris saying "if people really knew, Brexit would be stopped tomorrow.  But, of course they don't know, and can't know".
