Nothing wrong with socialism.  In many countries it works well and operates on different levels.  But in the USA to say "Socialism" to most Americans is tantamount to saying communism, they simply don't understand it at all. At least that is my experience when I am in the States and the subject comes up.  It is a term that tends to be used as an insult.  Stupid I know but...

I'm from that #1. Ask the locals if they are happy - not. That report just takes a bunch of indicators and makes the ranking according to it. Suicide figures say something completely else. 

 

The reason socialist countries (while Finland isn't socialist per se, they just managed to elect a leftist government that jumped right back on the let's tax them to death train) do well is they are on average competitive. For people who are above the cut it's extremely frustrating to pay for the rest. That's why the brightest leave, extortionate taxes. And then it just becomes gray mush, as socialist systems do. It's alright if you are Joe Average - very average.

I have not been to the USA in years but I really wonder at the state of affairs there. Either Trump or his base (or both) are not very bright. First, we have Iran where the authorities have been under pressure from their own people for not improving the economy and for the Mullahs and chiefs in the Revolutionary Guard living like kings while everyone else is scraping a living. Trump pulls out of an agreement that could have been built on (Iran badly needed investment and would have done more for that alone). Then he threatened Iran. The effect was to completely stabilize the country behind the authorities there in the face of an external threat, putting back the chance of a change of regime by at least a decade if ever.

 

Then we have Trump having a go at four Congresswomen of colour. Yes, his claims that they were immigrants (in a land of immigrants where Trumps own wife is an immigrant!) were wrong in three cases out of four; and they are more left-wing than most but hey America is supposed to be the land of the free. And they are in perpetual tussle with Nancy Pelosi. Instead of exploiting this difference within the Democratic Party, Trump manages to achieve two own goals: 1) Unites the Democratic congressional party 2) makes the congressional Republicans look terrible because they are unable to say it the way it is.

 

I mean, when you have the Prime Minister of the UK calling it the way it is, a woman who is conservative to her core and PM of a country that is the closest ally that the USA has, there must be something in it!

Coincidentally, this list of happy places to live, corresponds fairly closely to the list of countries that are deemed to be fully democratic..... so happiness must be related to the level of democracy.... which, of course, does not include the Divided States of America, which is deemed a flawed democracy.
