BANGKOK, 20 July 2019 (NNT) - The United States has congratulated Thailand’s on its general election, return to democratic rule and smooth organization of the ASEAN Summit. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, David R Stilwell, met with Prime Minister’s Secretary Disathat Hotrakit at Government House.

The U.S. government congratulated Thailand’s on its return to democratic rule and says it waits to work with the new Thai government.

Thailand is believed to be performing well and efficiently as the ASEAN chair and the U.S. considered ASEAN as suitable for investment.

Mr. Stilwell welcomed Thailand’s plan to host the Indo-Pacific Business Forum in November, which will offer the opportunity for private firms to do business with those in the ASEAN region.

That's the best he could do? A meeting with the prime minister's secretary? I would say he has been dissed.

With there being three Deputy Prime Ministers, he was dismissed at being relevant.

It's like David (TH) & Goliath (USA) just a bit of diplomatic pep talk.

Especially as Prayut actually took time to meet with a Chinese provincial governor a few days ago.

Why is Stilwell even meeting with this crook all of who were well paid for their post election vote.

Washington must be really broken if it thinks Thailand has returned to democracy.

Embarrassment all around

No Embarrassmernt at all- The US visitor was an Assitant Secretary of State and thus would not meet with a Prime Minister-  The Secretary in Thailand he met with is a high position equivalent to the Us visitor-  The subject was to make plans for the arrival of the Secretary of State- Mike Pompeo who will be in Bangkok to discuss isues with the Thai Prime Minister and other  ranking Thai cabinet Members.

With the problems with Iran and the Chinese build up in Cambodia-Thailand is a key piece of the US Strategic plan-  America needs Thai military bases.

But the governor of a Chinese province would? Does that mean that the Chinese governor and the Thai prime minister are of an equal level? One governor of a Chinese province meeting with another?

"With the problems with Iran and the Chinese build up in Cambodia-Thailand is a key piece of the US Strategic plan-  America needs Thai military bases," you might be wrong... I believe the US would side more with Viet Nam, who dislikes China.

I just hope that Thailand do not get into USA BS...giving away land for another US Army base.

As an American, please allow me to apologize for the stupidity and hypocrisy of the US government. Fools....

America does not need Thai military bases.  We had them and were kicked out by the Thai government in 1976.  But I could always learn something new.  What is the USA's strategic plan for South East Asia?

Best do a poll and see how many Americans you speak for.

Bay of pigs? Vietnam? Operation Phoneix? The War on drugs? The destabilising of the south American companies? etc etc etc

The Vietnam war finished in 75. The issue these days is Chinese hegemony and Thai and USA cooperation regarding military and naval manoeuvres...Operation Cobra Gold comes to mind. Warm water ports and military harbours etc.

That would split sides all around the planet.

America supporting  the 'the Caammies.'

Vietnam knows which side it's bread is buttered, as all the visa dodgers will find out quite soon.

I thought the Yanks got their asses kicked out of S.E. Asia? There are none of their bases left are there?

Joe's son went on to be a war hero and later president. Opa Trump was a German draft dodger and brothel owner whose grandson went on to dodge the draft too, with "heal spurs", before stealing the presidency.

Embarrassing, in that they both perpetuate the farce of a democratic elected government.

The bases were never American bases but always controlled by the Thai military.  There are plenty of Thai bases left and there are plenty of American assets that are still allowed to use them on occasion.

Whether Thailand would allow the US to use them in the event of a war with Iran is unknow but the so called shift towards China is merely a game being played by a Government that historically 'bends with the wind'.  I doubt that a Chinese military base in Cambodia would  make any country in Asean feel safe.

The American strategic plan is to keep the sea lanes open- and use certain countries in SE Asia as a hedge against Chinese influence. The Us already has arrangements in Singapore, Thailand and other countries in Asean.  In addition, the US and Australia work very closely together on defense issues.

Trump has a limited knowledge of any of this and is depedent on the State Department; Defense Department , the National Security Council the  Joint Chiefs to handle all things military . President's come and go- the  Generals' run the show.

Perhaps all of the above?

"Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will recommit the United States to supporting the development of South-east Asian nations in the face of a rising China during a visit to Bangkok... The initiative was launched 10 years ago by then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as a way to promote coordination and economic growth in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam - several of which have increasingly close ties with China.
