Egyptian embassy silent on diplomatic links of Phuket roti vendor attack victim

PHUKET: The Egyptian embassy in Bangkok today (July 25) declined to confirm or deny whether the Egyptian man struck in the neck with a meat cleaver by an enraged roti (pancake) street vendor in Phuket last Friday night is the son an Egyptian diplomat.

 

The Egyptian tourist, Makmoud Amr Mahmoud Abbas, 29, suffered a cleaver knife wound to the neck when he was attacked by roti vendor Surachai Raksub, 32, in front of a Family Mart store on Soi Ta-iad in Chalong last Friday night (July 19).

Mr Abbas was rushed to a local hospital with a seven-centimetre gash in his neck.

At least the embassy seems more diplomatic than the outspoken ambassador's son.

Yes, family members also have rights, privileges and immunities under article 37 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Roti,never heard it called a pancake,it's a bread.

Perhaps the Egyptian embassy is trying to save some embarrassment for the family if sonny is supposed to be a good devout Muslim. Cavorting around in a place like Pattaya, with its reputation for sleeze and debauchery, may not look so good for daddy if indeed he is a big shot in the Egyptian gov't.

Immunity from what, being stabbed in the neck? He hasn't been accused of any criminal offence as far as I am aware, he was the victim, so why would he need to invoke diplomatic privilege?

Oops. I saw Pattaya when reading but now see it was Phuket.
