Thai Navy pushing Cabinet for a second Chinese submarine

The Royal Thai Navy say they want to purchase a second submarine valued at 12 billion baht from China. Under the NCPO military government the cabinet agreed with the navy’s plan in 2016 to buy three submarines from China valued at 36 billion baht. The purchases would be spread over 11 years.

The navy says they’re now waiting for the new parliament to approve the government’s 2020 budget before the purchase of a second submarine can be approved.

Construction began in China on the first submarine for Thailand in September last year and is expected to be delivered to the navy in 2023.

The Navy has struggled to get interest from previous Thai Cabinets but the military government since 2014 was a lot more sympathetic to their requests. The Navy told Cabinet that there have been no submarine purchases for 60 years and the Thai Navy needs submarines to protect the countries marine and coastal interests “including the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand” (we’re not sure what other waters it would be protecting??).

In 2011 the navy wanted to buy six German-made second-hand submarines at a cost of 7.7 billion baht but requests were rejected by the Yingluck Shinawatra government at the time. Since then there has been a political veer to the east and an increase in military spending with China.

Gulf of Thailand is on average 60m and at best 90m deep? Maybe a mini sub.

Andaman is more like it at 1000m, but it is so insane to buy subs as they will never be used, and there is greater need for that money to be used domestically. Even their aircraft carrier purchase is a laughing dud.

But the kiddies must have their toys, it's a bit like who's got the biggest dick or who can pee the furthest up the wall

Yeah but besides the subs, they are purchasing a lot of other overly expensive toys. Watch them increase the conscripts next year as well.

Surely highly visible coast guard vessels would cost a lot less, be more flexible in usage, easier to maintain and avoid the inevitable stuck in mud or getting caught in fishing nets.

Submarines just don't seem to make a lot of sense for Thailand...although 1 new Chinese sub for 12billion vs 6 German subs for 7.7billion sure doesn't seem like good value.

Don't they have an aircraft carrier without an engine?

HTMS Chakri Naruebet .. Smallest A C C in the world by all account's .. I'm saying no more on that .. Had an engine but spends most of its time tied up in port as it costs a fortune to run .. Did have some second second hand Harrier jump jets on it but none of them have flown for yrs from lack of maintenance , spares , training etc ..

Guess which is the Chakri ..

This is good......The first sub would have got lonely being parked in the shipyard all alone......Now there can be 2 subs parked in the shipyard....

Actually they could park them in the Bay of Thailand 'cos the conning tower will be sticking put of the water anyway????????????????

No, but the back-handers certainly amount to a lot more and that's all that matters.
