More details have emerged after a taxi driver was killed and two tourists were severely injured on Koh Samui in Thailand's south.

A Toyota Fortuner taxi hit the sidewalk on the Khao Laem Yai hill then collided with a coconut tree and a power pole, said police.

It is not known if the driver fell asleep at the wheel or just lost control of his vehicle, they said. The taxi was probably headed for the port at Nathon.

Phongphot Madaeng, 47, died at the scene.

The tourists - a man and a woman - were taken to hospital.

The accident happened on July 19th, reported Sanook.

Sounds to me that they have a great amount of new "details".

Sleeping sickness, affecting quite a few drivers here, getting more

popular than the brake and a car cut in front ,excuses.

Just a result of the completely insane economy we live in ... forcefully pulled over a society that cannot handle it !!!

... and it will get worse - much worse

Today alone we have 3 stories of drivers sleeping behind the wheel,2 involving fatalities and 1 a silly attempt at humour ....Pathetic

"collided with a coconut tree"

Possibly needed to fill up with Shell petrol!

?? There isn't one!

...And here we go AGAIN....constant daily occurrence here.   Samui is one of the worst for road fatalities...

A Thai taxi driver and a Fortuner.  What a dangerous combination but very lucky that the tourists survived this time.

As this has been reported July 20th, let's close this thread.

Seems to be a dryspell in accident reporting.
