Are tuks easy to find in the non-tourist area of Vientiane?

The Vientiane train station is a gamble, far away from the tourist area and people report there are sometimes no public transport options around. 

Do you guys think if I get off and start walking south a tuk will see me passing by?

Worst comes to worst I'll just reach the border, learning my lesson about taking a bus next time. But in a best case scenario a tuk is at the train station or near it, making the train a feasible path to cross through with.
