If you have to use MSG to enhance the flavor of what you're making then you must be a terrible chef. One can season food plenty with nam pla or even just good ol salt and pepper. Popular Post EricTh
Thai people put MSG into everything. They are very ignorant of the fact that some people are allergic to it and it's a neurotoxin poison. When I asked whether there is a 'no MSG' Mama noodles, they looked at me in a strange way. They just know that it is 'aroi'. Edited September 3, 2019 by EricTh 1 1

Cheers Yes, there is MSG in Mama noodles. I can read the Thai script on its label which is one of the first thing I need to read. It's better to buy those noodles without any seasoning packets although you have to do your own seasoning which can be quite troublesome. You might try some of the Korean or Japanese noodle brands, some of those specifically say 'NO MSG' in English but they cost much more. My wife doesn't make som tam, she makes the real thing, tam mahoon. No MSG. She does occasionally use a small amount of MSG in some dishes but not tam mahoon. When I first came to Thailand, she was the chef in a very succesful Thai/Issan restaurant in Pattaya. Her food is wonderful, far better than Nahm. I can't tell you exactly what goes into her Tam Mahoon because the main ingredient is sent by her family in Nong Khai. Some liquid in a bottle. Tastes great though, far better than boring Thai som tam.

It's because of the MSG in the salad at Sizzler that makes you feel thirsty. I avoid Sizzler and MK as much as possible. I always ask the street vendors and waiter/waitress at the hole in the wall restaurants NOT to put MSG in my food. Most of them don't. There's no chance of doing that at the big chain restaurants.
Sydebolle
I'm not a specialist but why is the stuff forbidden in Europe? There are milligrammes in certain spice mixtures - that's it! Grannie should stick to the traditional way of cooking, like her Grannie did it when Phong Chuu Rot (MSG) was not invented yet - me thinks ???? Damrongsak
I learned to order food my way (in Thai) years ago, as I'm vegetarian. No sugar, no fish sauce or shrimp paste (etc.), no MSG. I did have one young cook put ganja in my stir-fried vegetables, but he told me as he served it. I didn't believe it at first. Sure enough ... 555 Several times out in the boondocks with farmers, my lunch was a ball of sticky rice, some salt and some hot peppers. Maybe some Pak Boong (water morning glory) or weeds from the forest (like weird ferns). They liked me because I was cheap to feed.
tgw
Does anyone know if a double-blind study has been done about "MSG allergy" ?
Popular Post tgw
nevermind, found it: Quote researchers who did double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, considered the gold-standard in research methodology, were never been able to replicate CRS. One such well-respected study that tested people who identified themselves as sensitive to MSG, found no significant differences in the prevalence of responses between groups taking the placebo or the MSG. (And if you were wondering about the title of this blog, this is the connection: the placebo effect among those who believe they have a particular sensitivity is a very powerful thing. That’s why it’s so important to conduct studies in a blinded manner. It’s the only way to determine if the sensitivity is real.) A larger review of the research about purported sensitivity to MSG found some sensitivity when extremely large doses of MSG were given but even then there was no consistency. Researchers found no reactions to MSG when it was given with food, which is how people would typically have MSG. Why would people? All the attention on MSG may have something to do with why people think they have a sensitivity to it but really don’t. Research has found that people with “unconfirmed” reactions to foods were “influenced by the popular news media.” https://msgdish.com/msg-and-the-placebo-effect/ 2

MSG is big business for them so they don't want to lose their profit. The real double-blind studies is done by consumers themselves which have felt the effects of MSG like migraine, thirst, weakness etc. It's a sign your body tells you that the food that you're taking is harmful. https://wakeupandlive1.wordpress.com/2013/09/24/avoid-being-secretly-poisoned-by-msg/ Edited September 4, 2019 by EricTh 1
