Flood waters reach Roi Et in Thailand’s north-east

Run-off from last week’s heavy rains around Khon Kaen and parts of the north-east, have now made their way to the province of Roi-Et, south east of Khon Kaen.

A large number of households and farming areas are now flooded after concrete barriers in Nong Hin Village of Panomprai District were breached by strong currents, according to Thai Rath. The floods started affecting large sections of Rai Et from Saturday.

A three kilometre stretch of Highway Number 502, linking the northeastern provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima and Yasothon, has also been inundated in places and damaged.

Provincial officials have displayed warning messages, but large trucks continue to travel on the highway.

In whole Thailand in the past they build their houses on poles, why don't the engineers build the roads also a few meter higher then the rest?

Oh and don't forget to put also the pipes underground to connect both road sides.

This seems to be the largest contributing factor to most of the flooding in this area, they have bridges over any thing that looks like are creek or river but don't install culverts in the low lying places that would help drain the water faster into the rivers which would in turn flood more. The land is quite flat so requires a lot of engineering  which costs a lot of money that gets diverted to pockets and bank accounts instead of solutions for poor farming communities that don't really have the status required to receive assistance required to improve living conditions, instead the fat leeches of this society continue to suck the blood of the lower classes.

Besides isn't this story about a week late?

In Isaan, water flows east, and south--toward Mekong.  Unusual flooding from Pacific storms--in addition to the normal Indian Ocean monsoons.  Tough luck for the rice farmers in the flood zones.

In their place I would transform these rice fields into fishponds; especially that fish is sold much more expensive than rice.

Rice stays where you plant it, fish go with the flow when it floods …… You need some serious engineering to flood proof your pond.

I'm guessing you have never driven around Isaan very much, the vast majority of the roads are built higher than the rice fields.

The last time I was in Phanom Prai was for a rain making festival. Sorry!
