Sections of a ceiling scattered debris after a collapse at a shopping center in the Bang Yai area of Nonthaburi north west of Bangkok.

A shopper was just meters from serious injury or possible death, reported Daily News.

Rainwater came down with the ceiling as a thunderstorm raged outside.

CentralPlaza WestGate issues statement after ceiling tiles fall

CentralPlaza WestGate shopping mall announced that it would remain open on Thursday despite suffering a deluge of rainwater, which occurred when two large ceiling files crashed to the floor.

The management of the shopping mall was quick to issue a public apology after a Facebook user, whose account name is Ws Ampper, posted two short video clips showing the tiles falling on Wednesday night.

In the main clip, two ceiling tiles can be seen tumbling down and falling on the roof of a booth on the ground floor causing a shopper to quickly move back. Rainwater then gushed in.

By Thursday morning, the clip had been viewed over 540,000 times, shared more than 6,200 times and received more than 7,300 comments.

The management of mall said in a press statement that the accident happened following hours of torrential rain in Nonthaburi’s Muang district and issued an apology for the damage caused by the bad weather.

The statement said officials of the mall managed to clear the spot within 30 minutes and the situation has now returned to normal. It said no one was injured in the incident and only a small number of goods were damaged.

The statement added that the mall took an immediate action by having its engineers check the area and fix it immediately to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Wonder if they have ever heard of Prevenative Maintenance rather than Reactive Maintenance,,, guess not or else this never would have happened.

Yes they not take care too good. But similar also happens from time to time in the West. It's not only happening here in Asia.

This very well known west gate shopping mall should have a word with their construction company over quality of their work...

Very good to hear nobody got hurt.

quality of their work, what is it? this is not Thai.

Normal Thai building standards apply here.  Can't wait for a serious Earthquake because well over half of Bangkok will fall apart in minutes !

Have to agree with you except for your choice of words "can't wait".

Hopefully, we never hear of such an earthquake.

So what difference does that make to the story at hand?

And of course, no mention from the mall of exactly how or why the ceiling collapse happened, or whether they're planning to do any checking as to whether other areas of the ceiling/roof construction also might be vulnerable/substandard.

Kinda pathetic, as usual...  The news report feels like they can't actually name the mall where the mishap occurred. But then the mall itself can come along and issue a public statement, and that then can be reported....

This occurs reasonable often it appears in LOS, could the construction be less than meeting standards??

meets "standard" , standard 20-30% built in kickback fees

That's not the problem, but who attached them?

Burmese or lao people, thai cannot do something like that , isn't it ?

in fact, no Thai would want to work in the building; it is dirty and badly paid, it is necessary that another nationality does it ...
The problem is that poorly paid, the worker does not care if the work is well or badly done .. And the Thai leader will not see, it could soil his beautiful shoes;
with this we all know that the words prevention, maintenance and repairs are not part of the vocabulary in Thailand ....

Not as often as I have read about in Thailand in the last couple of years.

Sometimes the odd leak, but not ceiling falling in

With all the 'live' electrical equipment that appears in the videos the very first thing mall officials should have done warn customers to stay away from the water and get the power off in the affected areas.  Electrocution is usually fatal..

So we should avoid shopping malls when it's been raining for hours outside?  That makes sense, NOT.   I think they need to replace the poorly constructed roof.  Just a miracle nobody died .
