Falsified lab report
It seems that I received a falsified lab report to disguise a mistake by selling me a lab test that they never performed. What would be the right course of action in such case? Details: I usually get my tests done from a small clinic rather than a big hospital. They’re far from professional (I’ve witnessed a couple of hiccups there) but what can go wrong by taking a sample from you, putting in a bag and sending it to a lab? In fact, it seems many people use them exactly for this. I recently ordered a magnesium test and made clear beforehand that I want an RBC (red blood cell) test, not a serum test. They confirmed before that it would be an RBC test and even showed me a screenshot stating exactly this. Even my invoice later clearly states Red Blood Cell test. However, when I received the lab report a couple of days later, the lab report clearly states it’s just a serum test. Again, the clinic doesn’t do the test themselves but they use one of the big labs (which I believe also work for the big hospitals). I reached out to the clinic and they checked with the lab and confirmed the lab doesn’t do RBC tests. I asked whether they would refund me or do the test again and they went silent. I followed up a couple days later and they checked with the lab again and suddenly they claimed that an RBC had in fact been done and that I would receive more details via email. A few minutes later I received a badly photoshopped lab report in my inbox. It was clear that someone took the original lab report with the old test result and reference range and simply added “(red blood cell)” to it. So, it wasn’t just a bad photoshop job, it also didn’t make scientific or medical sense—serum and red blood cells are mutually exclusive components of blood, and both tests have different reference ranges, so “serum (red blood cell)” is just nonsense. I called the lab directly and they confirmed that they don’t do RBC tests and that they never sent a revised or second lab report, only one lab report on the day when I received the original lab report. I have since then sent a formal email to the clinic demanding investigation, explanation and rectification of the issue. I gave them five working days time to reply and didn’t receive anything back. I then sent a formal email to the lab asking to confirm what test has been performed and whether they changed the first or sent a second lab report. Unfortunately they were also not very responsive but after several follow ups I eventually received an email from yet another party involved. It seems like my clinic doesn’t work with the lab directly but has another intermediary in between, which I’ve seen advertising online before for offering STD tests. At least they confirmed that no RBC test was ever done and that it’s no available at all, although the other answers seemed to evade the question So, I very strongly believe that one of the three parties involved, likely the clinic or their intermediary (I doubt it was the lab themselves because they seem to be a big and reputable lab), doctored the lab report to disguise the fact that they sold a lab report that was never performed. Apart from the commercial fraud, I’m more concerned about the fact that someone has the criminal energy to falsify a lab report. This raises questions as to whether any other test can be relied on, or whether they may have made up lab reports in the past for commercial gain. How would you proceed here? -
