Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has told United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres that Thailand will focus on establishing a partnership with Asean nations to promote sustainable development among Asean and other regions globally, Government spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat said on Sunday (November 3).

Narumon made the remarks during a briefing on the meeting between Prayut and the UN chief on Saturday afternoon at the 35th Asean Summit and Related Summits at Impact Forum, Muang Thong Thani in Nonthaburi province.

“General Prayut said Asean is ready to cooperate with the United Nations to exchange knowledge, experiences and practices to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs],” said Narumon. “Moreover, Thailand will participate in more UN activities in the Asia Pacific, especially in the challenging issues addressed in the 74th session of the UN General Assembly last September.”

In response, the UN chief praised the Thai government for taking an active role at the Asean Summit and missions to achieve the SDG. “Guterres said the UN has made environmental issues its top priority, and asked Thailand to be a pioneer in Southeast Asia for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and use of renewable energy. He also admired Thailand’s initiative in hosting a meeting to reduce marine debris,” said Narumon.

Prayut also maintained that Thailand was following UN principles regarding the fixing of illegal unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU), anti-human trafficking, anti-prostitution and human rights promotion. Finally, Thailand will continue to support the work of the UN’s Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific to celebrate its 75th anniversary in the region.

The word "freedom" never passes his lips either.

Didn't know the UN was anti prostitution.

I know I'm not anti prostitution,it should in fact be legalised and regulated to protect the workers in the sex industry and taxed to provide services for such protections.

Green house gasses? Rice crops are a huge contributor to this. Cambodia has a better system for growing rice with less emissions. Thailand needs to look to Cambodia for their way. Renewable energy? Yep. Make some more dams on the Mekong.

I hate to be negative, but it couldn't get any worse than it is now in the waters. This they need to step it up a heck of a lot more than what is going on now. This I welcome and actually would help to lend a hand, but cannot as I would be arrested and deported without a work permit.

Here is the UN's small definition of Human Rights. Does it fit the bill here?

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more.

I really hope FFP gets this bunch out and turns a new leaf for the Thai people. This old Elite and Military stronghold system does no Thai, Expat or Tourist justice. Not saying my country is any better as it is not, but this is where I call home but only allowed to be a yearly approved visitor. The only country you can get a retirement visa and not actually be able to retire. My country lets people become residents and citizens rather easily once they have been there a bit of time and vetted. There is only hope and up we can pray for.

So the UN is running the world ?....The UN is obsolete and run by ratbags now...Worst thing any Country can do is let the UN become involved with the running of it's country....

What utter cock. The UN runs nothing, its a talk shop and the ones talking are the member states who have complete sovereignty.

If you want to attack the UN do it for something it deserves to be attacked for like the power of veto of some countries, massive expenditures, high salaries and poor performance.

Just pure "blather" as I'm sure Guterres is aware of the 16-member Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership consisting of the 10 ASEAN member states (which includes Thailand) as well as China, Japan, South Korea, India Australia and New Zealand.

All Thailand has established is becoming a member of the RCEP. But it appears Prayut lays claim to be the hub of such a partnership.

Hosted a meeting?

I'm so happy I can relax now knowing the oceans around Thailand will be in safe hands!
