Boris Johnson to tell Scotland: vote Conservative to stop independence bid

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson heads to Scotland on Thursday to say a Dec. 12 election victory for his Conservative Party will halt Scottish National Party (SNP) plans to hold another independence vote to break up the United Kingdom.

Scotland is set to be a key battleground in the general election, one where Johnson's Conservatives and the opposition Labour Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, are overshadowed in popularity by the SNP.

The SNP have said that Scotland should hold another independence referendum in 2020 as they seek to end 312 years of political union with England and Wales.

Johnson and Corbyn both have said they would deny Scotland's devolved government the power to hold another independence vote next year. Scots rejected independence 55% to 45% in 2014.

Launching his campaign on Wednesday, Johnson has said a vote for Corbyn risks two referendums in 2020 - a new referendum on Britain's decision to leave the EU, which is Labour's policy, and another on Scottish independence, which Labour have not said they would allow.

"This is a crucial election for Scotland. A vote for the Scottish Conservatives is a vote to stop a second independence referendum and to get Brexit done," Johnson said ahead of his visit.

"Only a vote for the Conservatives will stop the SNP's plans to break up the UK."

Johnson is seeking to get a majority in December's election to secure passage of his Brexit deal, which he agreed with the European Union in October.

But SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon has said that a vote for their party is a vote to reject Johnson, escape Brexit and take control over Scotland's future.

The SNP are Scotland's biggest party, with 35 seats in the Westminster parliament, while the Conservatives increased the number of seats they hold to 13 in the last election in 2017, from one previously.

Asking (Polling) the rest of the union would have seen them out at the first attempt.

Well the Tories were pretty well scr***d in Scotland before he opened his mouth, but this will surely "mak siccar". What a pratt!

But the country next door says no.

As the EU allowed UK & the UK allowed the SP & HMG have had 3x mandates to get on with Brexit I cannot really see your point RR. The only people who haven't had their say are the rest of UK's electorate.

The country next door said yes, the Scottish electorate said no. It is only the SNP that are hankering for another referendum, the SNP do not speak for Scotland, they speak for themselves, but try to make out that all Scots want another referendum, they do not!

You are right not all Scots want independence but if 52% vote for it, it may well happen.  The last Scottish Referendum didn't have us at the point of leaving the EU.  This may sway enough Scots to get the vote through.  Anyway who could blame them for wanting to escape this rotten Downing Street mob.

But the Scots are sick to death of referendums, just the same as the rest of the UK, in April there was only 1 in 5 Scots that wanted another referendum before 2022.

From what I can see there is very little difference between Westminster and Holyrood when it comes to mobs.

So the whole of the EU should have voted on Brexit ?

Not quite a big red bus, but lies won they day in 2014 too.

The EU 'allowed' the UK to have a referendum? I don't recall DC asking Brussels for permission.

and also a very good reason to stay away from Tory, if you ask me, (but you don't)

As per your hypothetical #5

Nice one Boris, tell the Scots what they can or cannot do.

Dont think that Boris told the Scots either what they can or cannot do

It's a dilemma to be in if you're a Scottish voter, 55% to 45% voted to remain part of the UK but then 62% to 38% subsequently voted to remain part of the EU, essentially saying they value being part of the wider EU more than the unknown risks of an independent UK outside the EU. I expect that 62% figure has likely increased now a few of the economic realities of leaving the EU have become clearer since the referendum.

He wasn't particularly coy in stating his intentions should he be returned to No. 10

You’ll get no arguments from against staying away from Tories.

It is without doubt that the Scotts will tell Boris what he can do.

Who have no respect for democracy, feel the same way myself.

guess not,

now, this is gonna upset many;

looking at the foggy island from outside, having an impression of the composition of the society,

the vast majority of people "doing" smth to keep the empire running are salary workers

why the intercourse do so many salaryworkers vote Tory,

what makes them think that their interests and well being will

be taken care of by bj and retromugg and the like

really beats me - doesn't make sense

Can anyone believe a word he says as he lies all the time, its like a compulsion. He doesn't care if they're really obvious lies, he even lies when he doesn't have to. Its like that time he was asked about hobbies and he started lying about building model buses. I mean, he didn't have to tell the full truth and say 'booze, cocaine, shogging anything young that moves and casual racism'. He could have said watching sport and stuff which is true, but lying is just an automatic thing to do.

Its just what he does. He lies all the time and has betrayed everyone who he has ever come into contact with. If someone told him they could guarantee he would win the election but he'd have to run a far left administration and cancel brexit he'd be singing the Internationale and hugging Donald Tusk within seconds. He cares for nothing except himself yet there are still a lot of people who look at him and go ' that's my guy, I trust him to get it all sorted'. It just shows how easy life is for narcissists because people are drawn to them for some reason.

And the scary thing is that it is calculated. He knows he's lying. He knows a fair few people listening know he's lying. But he doesn't care, and he'll spread lie upon lie upon lie, and when he calls out someone else for lying when they're not, he'll point at himself and say 'you know there are lots of lies out there, so who knows if this is another one or not'.

So this pathetic excuse of man may persuade a sufficient amount of people to re-elect him as PM. We really have now entered the Age of Stupid as the skies darken and the world burns.

Brexit the poisoned gift that just keeps on taking....

Maybe Walloons should break free: Or the Basques; the Catalans; the Bavarians; or the Corsicans? Or perhaps the Burgundians would like to re-establish their country?

Just because you don't like Johnson, Brexit and the UK isn't a good argument.

Could be worse, albeit perhaps marginally, and elect the liar, racist, Stalinist, hypocrite millionaire Corbyn who detests the UK and all it's history and culture and wants to destroy it,

Probably because the option is no longer viable. Labour aren't the center left socialist option for working people any more. They're far left extremists who want to break up the UK, flood it with immigrants, change its culture and traditions beyond recognition and impose state control on everything. Of course some people will be more equal than others in their little utopia! Orwell must be smiling in his grave!
