Arrested at immigration 8 day overstay?

Any CM regulars... have you ever witnessed someone being arrested at immigration? 

 

I've been absent minded while touring Thailand then Laos then back to Thailand and managed to overstay my 30 day visa exemption by 8 days. I'm being advised not to go to immigration to resolve the matter for fear of arrest but thought some local knowledge might advise otherwise.

 

I'm currently in chiang mai and have a flight booked to Don Mueang tomorrow then out of suvarnabhumi on the 14th. 

 

I'm being advised to just lay low and pay a bigger overstay on exit from Thailand.

You will not be arrested, only pay the fine you'll be ok, your visa overstay is not a big deal...

I would take the go to the airport and pay the overstay upon leaving option as you were advised here
