Once upon a time, Thailand was popular. Around the 60's and 70's with Americans..... 

Times change and we must change with it. Western tourists are shamed by carbon footprint now. Climate change is forefront of many people's minds. Tourism will die soon. No one will be able to travel anywhere soon.

why do you people always denegrate backpackers ?! I was a backpacker once and stayed around thailand for 3 months with 3,000 pounds to spend in 3 months in 2004 when it was 76 bath to the pound . I spent the lot , around 220,000baht . Nearly all spent on street food and beer from mom n pop stores . You know the poor people who get most of their tourist money from backpackers not 5 star hotels and restaurents where some rich hiso gets the money . shame on all the people who for some reason on this forum who think backpackers are scum .I was a coal miner , soldier for 12 yrs , north sea fisherman . I AM NOT SCUM! And furthermore a lot fo them are university students on a gap year and will tour asia for up to a year and spend more money here than most 2 week tourists then go back to high paid jobs like my son did onbly he toured europe for 9 months and now woks aws boss of an it nhs trust company in london . he is not scum !!!

I guess I should check out some of those cheap countries in Europe, before they go 

completely bankrupt.  Well Greece is basically that and so is some other countries that 

will not say they are even close. Those socialist governments are sure working out 

aren't they.  In Mexico you pay lots for a hotel, knowing that the staff

is making peanuts, and the rich hotel owners are the reason for 100 dollars per night.

In Thailand, that is the same, if you pay 2 or 3 hundred for the hotel room, the staff

make very little and the owners get the largest amount.

A certain so-called 5* resort in Lipa Noi on Samui pays their farang employees, all management, 6 figures/month, while the few Thais in management get between 30-50K. Everyone else is getting 9K + their share of the service charge. The discrimination is disgusting.

Looks like the price have now dropped to EUR295 or about $652 for 2 pax.

20,000 baht for 8 days including food, hotel and flights. Mindbogglingly cheap or rather superb value for money.

Seriously, apart from the single-male-traveler, why are people still coming here?

because they are salty, fat, old geezers with no game so they have to pay for fun

 

I'm not old, so I did spend some time at backpackers places and met a lot of co like people. Usually they are not broke (me included) but they simply decide to save money on accommodation and instead spend it elsewhere - drinks, food, trips and so. The younger people aren't into mongering as much, so for what do you need luxury hotel room when you single?

 

The cheaper places are also easy to find new friends. Try finding new friends that in 4 Seasons, Oberoi or Aman

I and my gf spent time in Greece and our hotel was 80 Euro a night - 4*, all inclusive food and alcohol until midnight, our room was a two floor duplex with seaview. Very polite and fun staff.

An American breakfast.  lol.  I've never seen anything that resembles an "American breakfast" in Thailand.  Americans don't eat hot dogs for breakfast.  Every damn place sells fried eggs and hot dogs and calls it an American breakfast.

Newsflash here, hardly anyone over 40 can score a free one, no matter how much game they have.

King of game, Roosh tossed the towel in last year, when he realised there were no more free ones coming his way.

I can afford to pay, and can choose from a selection of 9s and 10s.

You can keep your free fatties and average lookers.

rubbish when I was 40 in OZ I was in my prime with string of hot woman , Promo girls I flew all over the country and the last GF was 18 and me 42. Those days are fading as Im nearly 60 but still have no probs with 35 to 40  year olds but the 20 year olds want money and Im happy to oblige

it was a full buffet every meal - different kinds of cooked chicken, pork, beef with assorted vegetables, some curries, cheese, cold cuts, and they also mixed on different days stuff popular with Germans, Russians etc

 

food was obviously not 5* quality, but it was damn good if you consider the overall value

 

Alcohol - wine was cheap <deleted>, but it was still a real wine not fruit juice with alcohol like in Thailand. Beer was great, and spirits like vodka and gin were good as well.

 

The hotel had also lots of entertainment for guests - like yoga, or swim classes during the day or dancers, big band, fire shows etc at night. You truly couldn't go to sleep without a big happy smile on your face.

So I can pay large to do yoga, or swim classes, watch dancers, bands or fire shows. LOL, I always thought I could do all that in LOS for a fraction of the price, staying at a nice, but not 4* hotel and get the benefits of Thailand for a bit extra. Perhaps I was wrong. Spain here I come.
