Foreign Ambassadors instructed to choose words carefully when meeting Sokha

Featured Replies

The ruling Cambodian People’s Party yesterday produced a video clip reminding foreign diplomats who visit former opposition leader Kem Sokha not to encourage him to partake in activities that could destroy the Kingdom’s peace. The video clip issued yesterday came after dozens of foreign diplomats began meeting with Sokha at his residence in Phnom Penh’s Tuol Kork district after Phnom Penh Municipal Court eased his bail restrictions.

Dozens of foreign ambassadors to Cambodia have met with Sokha at his residence. So far, he has held meetings with ambassadors of France, United States, Germany, Australia, Japan, Switzerland, United Kingdom, the European Union, Swiss, Belgium and Finland. Sokha was arrested in September 2017 and charged with treason for allegedly colluding with the US to overthrow the government. He then spent about a year behind bars before being granted bail, but restricted to a four-bloc radius around his home.

A six-minute video clip posted on the CPP’s Facebook page yesterday showed the ambassadors visiting Sokha. “Ambassadors, please do not recommend Cambodian politicians and other activists to conduct activities to undermine democracy and the rule of law. It could destroy peace, stability, freedom and independence,” a narrator says in the video. “If you love democracy, do not recommend that politicians conduct activities that will destroy peace, freedom and independence.”

No worries, Xi Jingping will be in charge soon!

Yet it was perfectly OK for the Cambodian ambassador in Jakarta to GATECRASH a briefing/news conference and putting the BBC journalist off with the comment "you shut up".
