Prince Mahidol Award Foundation to award German virologist, British physician

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Prince Mahidol Award Foundation, under Royal Patronage, is to present awards to German virologist, Prof. Dr. Ralf F. W. Bartenschlager, and a British physician specializing in infectious and tropical diseases, Professor Dr. David Mabey.

 

Prof. Dr. Bartenschlager, the head of the Department for Infectious Diseases and Molecular Virology at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, won the award in the field of public health for his work on the life cycle of the hepatitis C virus (HCV). His work provides a basis for the development of direct acting antivirals (DAAs), which are effective in more than 95% of patients.

 

Prof. Dr. Mabey, a professor of communicable diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom (UK), won the award for his research on trachoma, the most common infectious cause of blindness. It is responsible for the blindness or visual impairment of about 1.9 million people annually. Prof. Mabey, who has devoted more than 30 years to research on trachoma, showed that mass treatment with a single oral dose of the antibiotic azithromycin can eliminate trachoma.

 

This year, the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation considered a total of 66 nominations from 35 countries.

 

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua kindly assigned Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to represent His Majesty in bestowing the awards at the Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall in the Grand Palace, Bangkok, at 5:30 p.m. on January 30, 2020.
