Went to pick up my GF from Chiang Mai airport on Friday evening (peak time) The road leading into the airport same time last year was absolutely packed with cars, Songtaws and tuk tuks. However, on Friday it was dead, hardly saw any foreign tourists at arrivals, and the road leading into the airport was super quiet. It opened for business around two months ago and, so far, I haven't seen a single coach arrive there or a single guest using the roof-top swimming pool. The rooms are all dark at night, so I'm pretty sure it's deserted except for the few staff they have. It's obvious to everyone but the blind that there are very few tourists. Any potential tourists only need to do a cursory check on the internet to learn what the real story is.
