Thai man claims dash cam exploded causing fire in girlfriend's pick-up

A man went on Facebook posting pictures of a burnt out passenger compartment of a pick-up. 

 

He claimed that the three year four month old dash cam had exploded. He wanted to warn people that this could happen.

 

Comment was rife on Thai social media. Sanook reporters went to investigate and spoke to "A".

 

He said his girlfriend had driven to work and left the vehicle at 1 pm with a window ajar. 

 

When she came back at 4 pm there was smoke pouring out of the open window.

 

A passing rescue vehicle helped out and it was found that the dash cam had exploded and caused the windshield to shatter, he claimed. 

 

The resulting fire had taken hold on the seats, console and door parts causing considerable damage. 

 

"A" said it was lucky that neither he nor his girlfriend were in the vehicle at the time. 

 

He said that he had no motive in posting the story except to warn people about this as a lot of people have dash cams these days. He admitted posting an erroneous location on Facebook.

 

A Google search by Thaivisa regarding the possibility of exploding dash cams throws up differing opinions though the consensus seems that it would be a very unlikely occurrence.

He's talking too much.  He has all the answers, he wasn't there, and claims he had no motive.  Who said anything about YOU being responsible, Somchai?

Cheap, low quality Li-ion batteries exposed to sky-high temperatures under the magnifying glass of a car windshield. Then you turn them on? I mean what's NOT to go wrong?

when you turn off your car you turn off the power to the dash cam, if the window was left open someone could have easily tossed a cigarette but into the car which could also cause the same damage. I find it hard to believe the battery overheated with no power going to it, maybe he is looking for a hand out to help repair the damage

That's highly possible. I left a digital voltmeter on the dashboard for a few hours and it was melted when I came back.

 

  The Chinese cheap shi_e stuff must have some negative aspects, innit?

It depends on how the cam's connected. There's usually always plus ( #30) from the battery and it's switching on through a relay when you turn the ignition on. ( # 15)

 

    It's possible that the cam had a short. Some cheap cams have a Lithium battery. 

 

Almost all car dashboard cameras get their power supply from the vehicle's ignition through a charging cable. ... As an increasing trend in the dashcam industry, most of the high end cameras today use a capacitor rather than a battery, while the low end, budget dash cams still come with lithium ion batteries.

 

Cheap batteries are asking for a catastrophe.

It´s possible to see for the fireworkers (if they are professional) where the fire starts. 

 

A handful of Tesla cars also burned down. But compared with all sold Teslas they are only a very, very few. So, why not a dashcam too. Everything is possible. Or the cabling was bad.

      I recently realised my camera was not 12v, so hope it was not wired direct off car the battery supply, the cable supplied with the camera should have a voltage reducer built in.

Not necessarily as it depends how they are wired up. Some dashcams come with a Park sensor function which can be set to record if something knocks the car when it is left parked.

Mine doesn't have a battery and only works when the plug is in the cig' lighter socket.

I have hard wired mine to the ignition, but some people like to keep their cams on when parked. i Doubt it exploded, caught fire and the heat caused the windscreen to break IMO. I had a similar fire once cigarette lighter stuck in ( solder link had been replaced with normal wire) the whole cab burnt, dash,sun visors on fire dripped molten plastic, windscreen shattered.

  if plugged into the cig lighter that is all the time
