Recommend a lawyer for a will in Bangkok?
First, ask yourself, why do you need a lawyer? Is it because this is your first time but your will is simple, or because you have business complexities? Wills in Thailand are very simple to write on your own, and it just requires a few guidelines unless it is complex. My first Will was written by a reputable law firm in Thailand, and I learned later that they got the English translation completely wrong. These law firms use lower level admins for such activities. Beware. 1. Must be in Thai language. You can include an English translation but the courts will not recognize the English. I suggest writing your Will in English then going to a translation service for Thai language. Then...have a few Thai friends review it for accuracy, including double and triple check with Google Translate. 2. The Will is ONLY for assets inside Thailand. The Thai courts cannot recognize funds outside the country. You will need a separate Will for those funds. 3. You do NOT need to register it at the local ampher. Many people do this so the Will can be easily found, but not required. Keeping it in your desk drawer where someone can find it is acceptable. 4. You must identify an executor. Can be a foreigner or Thai person. 5. List all your assets, such as bank accounts and property so the executor can find it and the probate court can release the funds. 6. Get it signed by 2 witnesses (plus yourself). I have not found anything to indicate it must be a Thai citizen. In my case, I included an extra page of recommended law firms so my brother (executor) will know who can help him with the probate court. -
