webfact
Pattaya: Warning about fraudster on the loose preying on shops Picture: Pattaya Watchdog Pattaya Watchdog posted a warning from shopkeepers about a foreign man who was tricking them. He was filmed in what looked like a stationers where he bought a cheap item with a 1000 baht note. He was given change of more than 900 baht. He then went back to the store shortly after to say that he had found the item much cheaper elsewhere and wanted his 1000 baht back. The request was made in a flurry of aggressive accusations causing the shopkeeper to become disorientated, angry and confused leading them to give the man his money back but forget they had already given him his change. When the mistake was realised he was followed and seen hurriedly getting into a car. This appeared to be a white Toyota Vios (there was a spelling mistake in the story on Facebook). A trader nearby said they also fell victim to a similar scam. Posters on the story spoke of also being victims while others criticized the site for blurring the face of the man they wanted to catch. Many referred to the man as a "khaek" a common and sometimes considered derogatory term for people from the Indian sub-continent, notes Thaivisa. This happens so often you have to wonder do they really want to catch them or not ? 1

bbi1
Is the word "khaek" really considered derogatory? Thai people use it all the time to call Indians and Arabs as khaek. There's even a Wat Khaek in Silom in BKK which is a famous temple that Thai people go to. Do Thai people refer to those Thai-Indians (Sihks) as "Khaek" too? Just like they call white people "Farang" Edited December 6, 2019 by bbi1

Incidentally the Erwan bombers were described as Khaek Kao....white w*gs meaning Arabs! Its because the Thais do not perceive such terms as racist that white foreigners dont understand that f*rang really is a racist slur. 1

Guest
Are we really to believe a Thai shop owner ... or ANY shop owner in this world ... cares if "...found the item much cheaper elsewhere" The universal answer to that is ... roughly speaking, "And your point is? Don't let the door hit you in the a$$" Part two: So, to just get this POS out of their shop, they agree to refund his money. They look at a 50 Baht item, and hand over 1,000 Baht? Riiiiiiight. Good luck with that.

My buddy thought if he was right there at arms length watching close wouldn't be a problem.
