Popular Post Langkawee
On 12/14/2019 at 10:33 AM, HeyHeyHey said: Even your neighbors in SE Asia - Vietnam and Philippines are growing GDP like crazy and tourism sky rocketing in to their countries It's more fun in the Philippines anyway + way cheaper + no rude holes behind a desk screaming "you come too often!!!!" "what you do here?" "you want that sweet 345 THB for 10 hours of work job, riiight?" Instead you can stay 3 years on tourist visa without even leaving the country Exactly. Thailand has handed the golden opportunity for long stay visitors to see how lovely people are in other countries are. It's a blessing in disguise to be refused entry to Thailand. Many will feel the regret wasting too many years in Thailand. 1 1
Popular Post stupidfarang
News just out yesterday, "Thailand has exceeded the record for foreign tourist arrivals set last year with the 38,260,000th visitor reaching the country on Friday". My question is, where are they staying if hotels are down in people staying, and it is not just Pattaya hotels that are down. 1

He's in his late 60s and still seems to be in reasonable health. Mainly he's had enough of the drink and tip scrounging of the bar girls and constantly having to be sufficiently alert to avoid it. He's good natured and generous and the girls take advantage of these qualities that unfortunately are weaknesses in Pattaya. He drinks a fair bit but only at night and recently booze fueled rows have called an end to a couple of his friendships. But it's not been just his fault. These two ex pat pals seem to have a few problems of their own as well. I steer clear of the three of 'em as I don't want to get embroiled in their arguments and I only come for a holiday. He's a bit shy and reserved and I sense loneliness also plays a part in his discontentment. The strong baht has not helped and although he's not wealthy he's not skint either so it's not just down to money. He bitches about the hoop jumping, the 800,000 K and the 90 day reporting. He has never been in trouble with law anywhere in his life. If I was the leader of a community he's the sort of person I'd be pleased to have as a member of it. Some of his regular holiday maker chums have quit coming to Pattaya. He said to me the last time I saw him, "It's no longer the Pattaya I knew before" and I can see his point 100%. When the allure of the women wears off there is nothing at all to keep someone in the place. He also complains about the ever worsening attitude of the locals in general to falangs unless they are directly benefiting financially from our presence. If he does call it a day which I think he will it won't be because of his own failings but because of those that he as a falang in the LOS especially in Pattaya can have no control over. It's gonna be a big decision for him having to go back to London, a place where he has no family, few friends and nowhere to live. But it's the only home he knows apart from Pattaya. He's a good bloke and I admit I feel a bit sorry for him. It's gonna be a bit tough on him trying to find and afford somewhere to rent in London. Being a fellow who is approaching his 70s will not get him any help from the housing authorities in London. Especially as he's a white Englishman as I am myself. Any cracks about doing a Justin Trudeau will not amuse him.

But there were only about three GGBs in Pattaya back then and Caligula was by far the best one.

"According to state government statistics, a domestic tourist in Goa spends four times less than his foreign counterpart. This, despite several of these foreigners being travellers on shoestring budgets themselves. Several hoteliers claim that the spending ratio is even starker, perhaps ten to one." In the past, an enjoyable holiday to Thailand meant a westerner would be a return tourist, with many eventually retiring here. These days, with the majority of tourists being Chinese and Indian package holiday makers, many of whom will not be returning here to holiday, and will not retiring here, the expat community is in decline. Without western tourists coming here in the numbers they used to, who will replace the current generation of ageing expats, after they pass? Add to that, Thailand's visa requirements, when compared to neighboring countries, and I can only see a declining expat market here. Hugh Cow
Last time I was in Pattaya ( June then October) Many of the bars were empty. Admittedly low season but comparing with years gone by still low tourist numbers. Most of the bars were empty or just one or two customers. Scooters had about six other than that the corner bar which seems to have a regular clientele of ex pats was the only one with decent numbers. I think its a combination of problems that is causing the decline of western tourists. The pricing combined with the high Baht, dual pricing tourist scams and rip offs combined with all the new regulations aimed at foreigners has made it a much less welcoming, expensive and overly officious place to visit. I stopped in the phils on my way home from Thailand and found it cheaper and easier and nowhere near as onerous combined with friendly people. Yes it is still a third world country and has other problems but appears to be much more "foreigner friendly" ATM. couchpotato
Well I have to do a complete 180 here on the doom and gloom. Last evening I was in a few mainly farang oriented bar areas. The soi 6 area was the busiest I've seen for a long time. Most bars with multiple punters. So with 200 plus punters and 600 odd lovelies it was teaming. Likewise for Soi Buakao and some of the in between areas. Also yesterday went to Papa Beach Club for late lunch, and visited Nong Nooch. Both places very busy, with all nationalities, although Papa beach mostly Bangkok Thai's, but of course that brings money into this area. So all in all it's not as bad as reported..whether this is good for the coming year, who knows, but at least for now things are rockin!.

It's that 2 week period incorporating Christmas and New Year. It;s the busiest time of the year. Many business owners here would use profits made in high season to carry them through the low season. The high season appears to be shrinking in time, and I don't think 2 weeks of peak season is enough to carry owners through to the next peak season.
