Local level corruption...

It's a couple parragraphs, so pass to next thread if you don't wanna read ????

We opened a restaurant last March, on a main highway, so get a lot of passing traffic. All went well and we expanded quite quickly as we realised the full potential. Built a larger kitchen, extended parking, more seating. More business led to more staff being required and we now employ 8 staff. That's the back story.

Now we built a small hut next to the main road to do Somtam, extra to the main restaurant. Fair play it was close to the road but just a temporary thatch hut like every other food stall. Got told to move that by the road company. No worries, knocked that down and built a bigger nicer bamboo kitchen behind the electric poles and on our property.

Next we put up vinyl signs along the highway before our place to attract customers. Just did new ones last week and they were working a treat, packed out every day. Road company says all signs have to be taken down but seems it's only our signs that they have taken down !! All other similar signs for other restaurants still there..

So, looks like they have spotted place making money and want us to pass on some of that to them, otherwise they will try to hinder our progress at every step possible ???? Either that or someone else has paid them to disrupt our business ??

We will now just cut them out the equation and put all signs up behind electric poles on private land. That will probably annoy them more than arguing with them ????????

Why do people assume that they can get money for nothing, either through intimidating or causing disruption and road blocks... We have 8 families relying on our business, they will suffer not us if it goes south !!!

Have you paid the taxes due on your signs?  I believe that all signs are taxed and if they have any English on them I believe they are taxed at a higher rate.   If the tax is not paid then you must take them down.  I'll see if I can find the YouTube video that I got this information from....

If you do put signs up in English you must put the name also in Thai to avoid the higher rate of Tax, it can go in the bottom corner

Yes,  taxed  on  size and  extra  if have English. Double if  have  two printed  sides. Provincial Govt. agents circulate around annually and many premises take them down until  hunting season is over. lol

It's not what you know, it's who you know there is a sign at the beginning of the soi near me and it's for sure beyond the electric pole obviously know the orbortor

signage info is at 5:46 but this store is in Hua Hin (I believe).

Permanent road signs are taxed for sure but these are basically wood frame and vinyl signs that most businesses out of town use. We are not in town. I'm not bothered, we will put them on private property. Its just annoying that many government institutions condone ripping off the common population to make money.

Maybe the  criteria  differs  from place to place or province but we  have a 2.5 x 1.5 metre sign out on the roadside  at least 8  beyond the  electric poles. Land  designated  for widening the road but have never had a  comment.

They will still be taxed from what I understand.  Even in the video I posted, his wife's shop was not in the city and their signs were on private property.

Have your wife inquire how much it would cost to leave the signs where they were originally.  Just a thought.

The restaurant does normal Thai fair and Somtam, can you imagine the backhanders required if I started making pasties ???

But it just happens that I'm in Cornwall right now, so I'll stick a couple in ma belly on your behalf ????

I wonder whether companies like 3BB pay for all their posters. There are ones in my village still advertising 50/50 ADSL for Bht 100 a month from 4 years ago

Looks like its only Big Oud that gets to slap up vinyl then????

Government, and other public services such as the police and judiciary, at all levels in this country is run as a business. Salaries are deliberately set low to reduce the amount of taxation for their budgets, on the assumption that at least some of the staff will exploit every money making opportunity available in order to supplement their low wages and feed their bosses.

In most Western countries (and places such as Hong Kong and Singapore, coincidentally? both former UK colonies), this is called corruption and is reduced by setting higher staff salaries and vigorously pursuing those who seek bribes. Here that mindset does not yet exist, although if there is a change of Government to a party promoting an elimination of corruption, or a change in policy by the existing Government, that may come.

It will mandate the formation of a truly Independent Commission against Corruption, as was done in Hong Kong, reform of public salary funding, and revision of tax collecting to fund the programmes. I hope I live long enough to see it.

Every government in Thailand does that, and then does nothing. Saying something is enough, and everyone accepts that as normal and expects nothing different.

Cornish Pasties now have the same protection as things like Champagne, Stilton, etc. Only those made in Cornwall or by a Cornish person can be called Cornish Pasties. Some of the imitation Wannabees just don't cut the mustard ????????

Any signage even on your land even is taxable (licence) adjusted by size & lit or not.

Approach your local council for details. Do not fall out with the locals around you.

Corruption is rife & will remain so. My wife grimaces 3 times a month when they come for the handouts

Very correct.. This is the law.. You probably did not pay for your signs.. In phuket it used to be (for a medium sized sign) 1500 baht or maybe a little more a year.

It varies depending on location. Cities and towns are different from rural areas.

That is the law, signs have to be inside your own land only; and furthermore, you need to pay sign tax, and extra tax for foreign letters/signs...????

During the military period soldiers were walking all roads in the area where I live, and all signs outside of private land – no matter who, also Makro and 7-Eleven – had to me moved.

Very easy to make. Got 4 in the freezer now that I made during the cold weather.

On the other hand if you haven't got an oven.......impossible.
