The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Varawut Silpa-archa, will propose to the Cabinet on Tuesday (January 21) a number of measures to tackle the PM 2.5 dust particle crisis, which has made the capital’s air quality unsafe in some areas.

One of the measures is to allow trucks to enter inner Bangkok only on even-number dates.

The measures are proposed to last until the end of next month. New and more stringent measures will be introduced if these proposed measures fail to tackle the PM2.5 crisis, he said.

Hello,

I think the proposal is ridiculous , Enforce Safety and Exhaust Emission Control with all vehicles !!!

if they don’t pass testing and control they don’t drive !! And if they do not comply big fines or Driver Card Suspension Or both PERIOD !!

You mean, actually look to a westernize country for solution?

Dumb. Total pollution will not be reduced and odd numbered days will be off the charts! Plus traffic jams.

If none of the measures include stopping the burning of fields, forests and rubbish then it will fail to tackle the crisis.

Agreed. And the same number of trucks will enter Bangkok no matter what day it is. The odds and evens scheme is used in other cities outside Thailand not to impact on pollution but to try a reign in traffic congestion

The usual pathetic solutions which do not address the root cause at all.

Impotence from the top officials, down.

It seems that you are swimming in the murky, truly senseless ideas, it begins to impose a ban on all vehicles that infest the air, in this way the traffic problem would be solved too!

What happened to the idea of flying drones over the city and spraying pancake syrup? This recent smog control idea highlights the level of creative thinking that makes Thailand a special place. Banning trucks on odd days might be better than sticky rain but will do nothing to curb the national passion for burning everything in sight. Get serious!

Priminister gets a big hefty pay check from sugarcane im guessing. Why else would he allow murder of the public, brain deadening of the children, etc?

What is with this constant lying about actual causes and severity? Its insanity, but like every year nothing will be done... just drag feet until the wind changes! It doesnt undo the damage.

Picture taken near Passak dam, lopburi. Not near any major road or town, but near sugar cane fields. Why are sugar cane factories free to buy burnt illegal sugar cane?

I hope they're only pretending to be incompetent, the only other option is that they're all brain dead which I refuse to accept.

MRT, BTS and all public transportation should be free of charge. New buses also required.

All vehicles checked for emissions

Absolutely brainless.  File this useless 'proposal' in the Look I'm Pretending to Do Something drawer.  You can take it out again next year when you pretend to do something about next year's awful pollution.

There is nobody to enforce the laws-it’s all hopeless

Nothing he does will have any impact on the current situation . It will take a decade to solve the situation- Here are some solutions

1.  Stop the burning-  the  farmers need to be educated why it must stop and the alternate way of handling the soil. If there is a loss of income- a government subsidy needs to be given.

2.  Stringent pollution controls on all building sites with a limit to the amount of high rie building per year.

3.  All new vehicles  in Thailand need to be fitted with smog devices (catalytic converters) which purify the exhaust.

4.  Thailand needs to  start moving towards  gasoline products that contain smog free particles.  It is available and is used in California.

5.  Thailand needs to go all electric for public transportation- bujes;  commuter vans and trucks as well as encourage the purchase by the public of electric vehicles.

The have to start now  as the problem will get worse year after year and the numbersof people who enter the medical system will grow exponentially and the cost much higher that tackling the pollution problem now.

Yes,sensible solutions.....but you have overlooked the top of the top issue to be dealt with.....CORRUPTION. It simply remains the main impediment to progress at all levels in most "developing" nations.

I believe somewhere the Thais do know what the issues are and do have ideas on how to tackle them(in spite of the idiocy displayed by Gov.officials) - but just cannot organize and effectively implement any real strategy. This is a fundamental paradigm that defines a developed-nation...the ability to organize and implement.....oh ya,having an integral rule of law also helps.
