Radio host Rush Limbaugh announces lung cancer diagnosis on air

(Reuters) - Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh announced on Monday that he has been diagnosed with "advanced lung cancer" but plans to continue to do his program "as normally and as competently" as he can while he undergoes treatment.

Limbaugh, 69, said on the air he "first realized something was wrong" over the weekend of his Jan. 12 birthday, after he began experiencing shortness of breath, and that his diagnosis was confirmed on Jan. 20 by two medical institutions.

Limbaugh, who has hosted his daily program for 31 years, said he would be absent from the broadcast for "the next couple of days as we figure out the treatment course of action and have further testing done."

"But as I said, I'm going to be here as often as I can," he added.

Limbaugh has been a darling of the political right and a nemesis of the left since launching his show in 1985 amid the Republican revolution of Ronald Reagan, a man he has called "the greatest president of the 20th century."

Brash and colorful - he coined the term "femi-Nazis" to disparage women's rights groups and once said the "difference between Los Angeles and yogurt is that yogurt comes with less fruit - he helped spawn a wave of conservative commentators on radio, television and the internet.

He has experienced a variety of other medical problems over the past couple of decades, including a loss of hearing reversed by an electronic device called a cochlear implant, as well as an addiction to prescription painkillers that landed him in rehab for several weeks in 2003.

I never liked the guy, but no one deserves cancer. Hope he keeps fighting.

That is nice of you to say.

I never liked him and will leave it at that.

Absolutely!

Rush Limbaugh denied health risks of smoking years before lung cancer diagnosis: ‘I would like a medal for smoking cigars’

Years before conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh announced on his show Monday that he’d been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, he downplayed the health risks of smoking on his show...

During a discussion with a caller to “The Rush Limbaugh Show” back in April 2015, Limbaugh denied second-hand smoke was a danger and said it takes 50 years for smokers to get cancer.

The guy is a ass. Having said that I would not wish that on anyone. Unlike a certain guy that has been tossed off of YouTube five times and now off a website for constant harassment and attacks on others. Continues to attack a man dying of cancer and harassed a man dying of heart disease in Thailand. The great messiah is running out of options on the internet to attack others. Sickening that he and his cult attack those that are dying. But Mr. Right Wing deserves to be treated with the respect that his chances of living much longer are about nil.

Lucky for him that he is rich, unlucky for the millions of Americans who don't have access to decent healthcare, cos they can't afford it. Shame, Rush is one of those people that applauds and pushes for that.

Prayers for Rush.

Those who wish ill of any man will be the recipient in kind. Time and circumstance are great teachers to the smug and heartless critics of those who are suffering. Your turn will come as it will for myself.

I don't wish him ill, but I certainly don't like his views and the unfortunate influence they have had on society.

Because God is going to turn around and cure something She should have prevented from happening at all?

Good riddance. Purveyor of poison. Creator and enabler of George Bush. Iraq. Karma's a biatch. ????

I wouldn't wish such a disease on my worst enemy.

'Nuff said.

My turn for lung cancer? Ya mean I spent my entire life resisting the tempation to smoke tobacco and it was all for nought? I guess Rush was right about tobacco, after all.

I'm going to watch this closely.  I wonder what the best medicine for caner is. I'm sure Rush will get the absolute best treatment and then many others will be aware. Wishing the 'other' political side death is looking like a democrat type thing.

I’m not taking any joy from this man’s current state of health, but not feeling any sorrow either.

Yes, it's unfortunate that some people actually wish that Rush Limbaugh and an old monger from Pattaya both die horribly painful deaths from cancer, then go to hell and suck each other off. It's just a sad reflection of the world we live in.

Rush is a great American. Get well buddy. Been listening and learning from him for 30 years.

Learning what exactly? The guy is one of the world's biggest blowhards. That was quite clear to me the first time I ever heard his voice back in the 1980s. He now has cancer after himself being a cancer on the political system for decades now.

That said, I hope he recovers and learns something from the experience; perhaps a bit of empathy for other people who are suffering and can't afford medical care for example.

Considering how smug and heartless Rush is, I find this rather ironic

Let him rot in hell. The only issue I see is who the airheads that get their ideas from him will have nothing to replace him with... Oh no, wait, there's always Fox News.

Your compassion is an inspiration to us all

Maybe this will be his crowning teaching  moment.    Karma comes to my mind

Never cared much for the guy. Too much of a nut case for me.

But I don’t wish cancer or dangerous health conditions on anyone.

Hope he beats the cancer. Good luck Rush.

Don't think treatments for 'advanced lung cancer' will amount to much.  At that stage, it's the end game.

I always thought he appealed to racists, homophobes, women haters, and similar others.  I listened twice, then never again.

I hope he does not get too many 'get well soon' cards, but rather 'good riddance' flowers.

Rush Limbaugh's 15 minutes of fame inexplicably lasted more than 30 years.

The problem with Rush and his ilk, as well as their liberal counterparts, is you do NOT learn anytjing from them. When only one view, or one side of the story is presented, you come out dumber after listeniing to their babble. Preaching to the congregation fills your pockets but does nothing to enlighten us, or advance society.

Wishing Rush a speedy recovery or peaceful end.
