A small pharmacy in Phayao province recently informed reporters that medical masks were out of stock for almost a month, while big pharmacies are avoiding any disclosures.

The pharmacist, Sakchai Ponjanaphan, said his pharmacy in Muang district had run out of stock of face masks for almost a month, and he has not been able to order new stock.

Big pharmacies in the district, however, are silent about their stocks. Local consumers pointed out that the masks were available in the big pharmacies but at a jacked-up price.

They're certainly popular, a huge number of people are wearing them in town this week.

There's considerable doubt as to their effectiveness, the important thing seems to be to keep your hands clean, particularly after touching anything like door handles out in public.

A bottle of hand sanitizer like they use at the hospitals is the way to go.
