Doctors at Ratchaphruek Hospital in Khon Kaen met to discuss the case of a six year old boy who was brought into the hospital in the night in January suffering from stomach pains.

His father said that when he was in certain positions like lying on his stomach he would be in pain, but when he sat up the pains would go away.

An X-Ray was performed and the boy was found to have a 15 cm piece of metal in his small intestine.

Successful surgery was performed to remove the object.

It came from what appeared to be a magnetic construction toy that was in six segments.

Three were blackened indicating they had been inside the boy for a long time. The other three were still silver in color.

The pieces had assembled themselves inside the boy.

The boy's sister later revealed that she had seen her brother ingesting two pieces of the toy but fearing her father's reaction had kept quiet.

Doctors warned parents of children aged 1 - 8 to watch their children and not give young children toys with small parts as many children are wont to swallow them.

Nothing unusual. Common occurrence  with children. However, many countries take measures to prevent the sale of products that present a higher risk of injury. I would not be surprised if the kid also ingested some heavy metals like lead and cadmium etc. which are common to toys like this. Nor would I be surprised if this was a Chinese sourced product.

Just look at the price of quality made toys here then look at the billions of bits of Chinese unregulated unsafe junk for the answer. no one cares ????

Plenty of adults put very unsafe things in their mouths...cigarettes, alcohol....

Quite true. Good point. Lots of dangerous life threatening chemicals in cigarette smoke especially. And alcohol dulls the mind and kills brain cells in doses that result in drunkenness.

A baby puts everything in it's mouth, that's the way they investigate things.

Most survive, some don't make it... at 6 months if left unattended in the home even for a few seconds then he should be in a safe environment out of reach of things.

Sounds like you are describing my grandson.  Stick anything in his mouth.  Even trys to put my fingers in there.

I have to watch him every second I can when I have him.

A six year old should know better, but some still do it.
