my fave chambawamba song. memories of friends past in the local industries times gone past. the struggles of thatcher years that were suffered despite me not being anywhere near.

back to topic. forget it. it's not pounds you spend here, it's baht. check out the exchange rate. 40,000 minimum as I live, 50,000 if you enjoy a pint or two and the odd bit of company. 60,000 comfortable. 100,000 a month better but not living like a king. i'll let you do the math regarding exchange rate.

717 gbp/ month.... no

Do you have about 20,000 GBP in cash to meet the 800K baht requirement?  Your income is way under the 65,000 baht/month method.

You would also have the expenses of travel and visa applications. As I understand it, your UK pension would be frozen after the move - no more increases for cost of living.

717 GBP/month would give you a modest lifestyle in Thailand. A bar girl would make serious inroads on that.

Yes i savings but not quite 20k maybe save up some more.. im not over 50 so doubt i can get a retirement visa anyway im 31 its an army pension which i get so it wouldnt be frozen. I admit i like a bar girl now and again plus a few beers dont think i can live in thailand gutted ????

How would i get a job in thailand i aint got a trade all i know is how to kill people

if you want to consider working here, it will probably teaching English language at various sorts of schools. I know guys working here that have been postman, and painter / decorator. just a bit of paper with UK qualifications on it (Btec, C&G) will work. a few hours in khao san road can work wonders too, if you get my drift. however, stay home, work, build up the bucks, and enjoy a long holiday. my advice. no point thinking of retiring here too late though, things do not work (down below) after 65 years old . that's what they tell me anyhow

If I had more dosh, I'd consider hiring you for a couple of occasions.

Jokes aside, personal protection services or security sounds like where you should be - in any English-speaking country.

I thought the army would have taught you a trade as well as how to kill people, but if they didn't, pick something you want to do & set about learning how to do it (If you're "Retired" you have all the time in the world to learn a new skill ????

The obvious example is English teacher, but you need a degree to do that (I'm assuming that you didn't go to Uni before joining the army which would mean a lengthy commitment before you get (minimal) rewards).

A better alternative is to become a digital nomad & find something you can do online that will generate you enough cash (This could be anything from writing ebooks/reviews/blogs etc... Website/Social Media development/maintenance, paid for coding gigs or just selling stuff on eBay/Drop shipping).

Or, contact Brian Flowers (Owns the Pattaya Addicts site & a large chunk of the Nightwish group of bars) and ask him if he has any bar manager vacancies (He was advertising for someone a few months back, I'll try to dig out the thread & PM it to you.

Nope, not in any modern sense.  777 ~ USD 1,000, or 31,000 baht.  What you got for health insurance?  You could exist, but that's about it.  A dozen western meals, scooter rental, health insurance, handful of drinking nights out, all would empty you very quickly.  You can find some very cheap housing, but it would be minimal bare boned existence.  And since you are not of retirement age, good luck on long staying visas

To live in Thailand at your age, IMO you would need at least 200,000 GBP safely parked in investments back in the UK, yielding 4-5% return. Otherwise, you would be stony broke at age 50. Sorry, your best bet is to work and save for another 10 years.

He says hes got a pension.

You're only broke when you're dead.

I like that kind of attitude my friend maybe i could make something from it maybe it might not be the perfect life style am looking for but it beats living in england

I'm assuming you're on a medical 'grace and favour' pension, does that still include free accommodation in the UK?

Just wondering?

If you marry a local girl, 1000 pound a month will work, just get a married non O VISA from Suvannakhet or HCMC.

There is a reason the govt here set it at 65k and 40k if married.

At 30k you dont stand a chance. One spill on a motorcycle or illness and you could be wiped out financially.

Go do a TEFL course in the UK then contact a company out here for placement. Englishfirst will do both for you. Look them up.

Pattaya if you're looking for easy cheap sex with multiple partners.

I'm in Chiang Mai and the air's a real choker.

I had several pals living here happily on 20k/month (500 pounds) but they always had VISA problems.

Mind you, I've got a lot more than that and always have VISA problems too.

You should try the Philippines, easier for a young guy to stay there, and you can work, they don't seem to care much if you're not too obvious about it.

Plenty of decent condo's for 5k/month in Chiang Mai town, or a small house in the burbs for a similar price.

If you really want to live cheap, lots of student type places from 3k and up.

That'll cost you a full month pension just for travel & flights ! Be real man.

It depends on what you want in Chiang Mai, I don't know anything about Pattaya. If women are your main criterion, obviously Pattaya.

You can rent a studio apartment with communal swimming pool in Chiang Mai for 200 - 300 GBP per month. Even cheaper in Chiang Rai, 150 - 200 GBP/month. The range of bar girls decreases accordingly.
