Call me cynical. How do they prove he actually caught it while at work. He may have contracted at home, local shops or where ever he goes when off work.

Remember people, not long ago Thailand bostered they had a "cure" for Covid-19, I suspect they will use this cure (no one else knows about) and turn Covid-19 into a common cold, or if the guy dies, pneumonia.

Wearing a mask such as those so popular in Thailand CANNOT stop a person becoming infected with anything - coronavirus, measles, a cold, whatever - the wearer will NOT be protected against any air-borne diseases unless it's part of a military or hazmat grade protective get up or they are in a vacuum.

 

 

What you say above is simply wrong, depending on the kind of mask you're talking about.

 

The N95 respiratory masks can be and are very effective, if worn properly and combined with other hygiene protocols. Those are the type medical personnel typically are wearing when treating patients with the coronavirus, and for good reason.

 

The cheap paper drugstore masks that the Immigration staff mostly are wearing, on the other hand, are far less effective because they're not made to fit airtight on the face, whereas the N95 masks are. Meaning the wearer can be breathing in airborne virus particles that get around the loose fitting drugstore mask.

 

But either way, there are also other routes to infection, including through touching contaminated surfaces and then rubbing your eyes, or through airborne exposure directly onto the surfaces of the eyes. There's really no way the medical authorities here will ever have to find out exactly how this particular individual acquired the infection.

 

But the main point is, stop lumping all "masks" into the same general basket, because they're not all the same. In fact, they're very different between the two different types.

While on the subject of COVID-19 infection - about two weeks ago, while Thailand was registering about 40+ cases, Malaysia was registering cases in the 30s. Fast forward to today, Malaysia has 129 confirmed cases (refer to link below) - thanks to a few 'high-profile spreads'. Thailand, despite its more 'relaxed' approach to contain the spread, is registering 'just' 59 cases' at the time of writing. 

 

So either Thailand has been more successful in its initiatives (despite its 'mai phen rai' approach) or the military government is chock-full of blatantly lying b^stards.

If you read my Sunday column you will see I am one of the most outspoken and critical writers on the issues you mention. When it comes to the virus, however, I try not to panic and generally accept what the Thais are doing and reporting. I don't actually see what they have to gain from misreporting the details.

 

If that is naive then so be it. At least it isn't Thai bashing.

Just think like this. Thailand was from start pointed out to be the most vulnerable country outside China, due to it´s big connection with China.

After that it is suddenly more people that are dying in a lot of other countries more far away and with much smaller connection to Chinese people. Doesn´t that make you wonder?

People are just making things up that, for one reason or another, they are desperate to believe. There are well documented reasons why infection rates in Thailand may be low. These include good public health measures, good responses from the public, and possibly a favorable climate. There could be a cover up, but I don't see why or how they would benefit from this seeing as tourism is already decimated. There may be more infections to come but I prefer not to speculate or "wonder" as others are doing.

Well on pictures of the airport i see many travellers without mouthmasks...so it's not strange..the Thai don't wear mouthmasks anyway in the malls.

Ravip - You are assuming that he caught it from a foreigner at the airport. It could have been caught from a Thai at the airport or outside. There are hundreds if not thousands of Thais working at the airport, plus all the taxi drivers, bus drivers and all their customers. There is no clear way of finding out. I think there are more Thais having it than they are letting on.

No, most people (at least Prayuth and Anutin) wear chin mask and don't wash their hands then wonder why they don't work as expected.

Currently  not in Thailand. ,so on Virus. not sure. but was there on bird Flu. ,all cars where sprayed along the roads before going into a village. ,now near Italy. ,dont understand how its got this bad ,for sure lot business  are going to fail world wide ,on Road death. ,why does thailand make the roads bigger so people can drive faster , but in France roads are made smaller to reduce speed and make bus lanes.  seems  better system. ,who does own the road construction  company ?

Yes, I know all that about N95s etc, but had you read it properly, I mentioned the lemmings who all wear those green or pink paper masks which are worse than useless.  OK, IF a person is harbouring COVID-19 then wearing a paper mask MAY, just possibly, help them to not spread it to others, but as a protection against infection, sorry, nah.  

 

So sorry, but I didn't 'lump all masks into the same general basket' - I was referring to the ones the vast majority of Thai people use and seem to rely on as protection.  

 

As to not touching your face or mouth, it seems not everyone has quite got the hang of that yet.
