Locals struggle as Phayao is blanketed by haze

Villagers in Phayao province are currently facing the problem of toxic haze that is causing difficulty in breathing, sore throat and burning nose.

The haze could be seen clearly in Phayao province on Saturday (March 14) and it even obscured the scenery around Phayao Lake. People who came in the morning to exercise had to wear face masks. The Doi Luang Mountain on the west side of the lake was completely screened off by the haze.

Vision on the road was only up to a distance of 10 metres, while the morning sun was a dark orange due to the smog.

The level of particulate matter (PM) less than 2.5 microns was 215 micrograms per cubic metre, PM10 was 251 micrograms per cubic metre, and the Air Quality Index (AQI) value was 325 micrograms, which is considered a hazardous level.

Meanwhile, forest fires were ignited continuously in many areas, such as forests in front of the University of Phayao and Wiang Lo Wildlife Sanctuary.

So the symptoms of poisoning by airborne pollution are chronic cough, headache, nausea, watery eyes, and possibly a fever.

Wait a moment: isn't there some sort of flu going around with similar symptoms? How os one meant to tell the difference?

How much tax do you guys pay?

Are you Mr. Heath? Or Mr. Wilson?

The Beatles have been singing more than 50 years ago about such nonsense...

If it makes you happy, every item you buy in Thailand is taxed with 7 %. No?

So you might calculate yourself whatever you want.

This issue has nothing to do about tax money...unless of course you want to talk about corrupt gov officials or anyone in gov who is receiving a salary for pollution control or is that the pollution no control dept..

It sort of does as the companies creating the pollution pay the Thai Government tax money, yet the Thai Government doesn't impose a tax on labor for Thai workers (up to a certain amount) as do western Governments.  Not ideal i agree

Any idea how and what?

Ok, I'll have a go.

Their national 'army' do nothing and have done nothing for many years, so .......

1. A nationwide TV, internet and radio campaign indicating that from 1st April ( I know the significance of this date), anyone caught lighting forest fires will be shot on site! Deploy soldiers into the forests and earn their small salary.

2. Government officials will patrol rice fields and other land. If the land is seen to have been burn't before they got there. Take a GPS co-ordinate, find out the land owner and fine them via mail. If they don't pay, confiscate the land.

3. Any trucks, lorries, pickups found to have excessive black smoke, details are taken and owner must report within 7 days to government DVLA for inspection checking to see if oil has been changed.

4. Any of the above vehicles found to have excessive smoke but have a valid road worthiness certificate, the number plate will be tied to Government DVLA location. Logs will indicate who passed said vehicle and they will be dismissed immediately.

These are only a few of the many ideas out there. Not too difficult to put into place. Advertising on TV, internet and radio will be free using government funded media. The rest are government employees only. However ......... where is the earning potential for the government in all of this?  no where, hence it won't be done!  End of. ????
