Trat locals call for lockdown after 10,000 people descend on province in just 4 days

Tourism officials and locals are calling on the governor of Trat province to implement a strict Phuket style lockdown amid fears over a possible COVID-19 outbreak.

To date, there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Trat province. However, according to Thai news site, Siam Rath, more than 10,000 people have arrived in the  province since 26 March, sparking fears that an outbreak of the virus could be imminent.

The 10,000 arrivals are thought to mostly be made of people returning home from other provinces in Thailand, as well as foreigners who had fled so-called COVID-19 hotspots such as Bangkok and Pattaya in favour of places like Koh Chang.

Now locals are worried that the influx of people will bring with them the COVID-19 virus.

Siam Rath said that to date life has carried on pretty much as normal in Trat, but as of Sunday, screening measures had been stepped up across the province, with a particular focus on people arriving from Bangkok, Chon Buri, Phuket, Sa Kaeo, Pattani, Yala, Songkhla and Narathiwat.

Anyone who travelled from these provinces and has a fever or displays other COVID-19 symptoms is urged to contact Khao Saming Hospital.

Meanwhile, officials from the Tourism Council of Trat have written an open letter to the provincial governor asking for a ‘lockdown’ similar to those in place in Phuket and Buriram to be implemented throughout the province.

In the letter, tourism officials ask that all accommodation in the province be closed from 5 April, that restaurants are only allowed to provide a takeaway service and that convenience stores are closed from 8pm.

I was told by my wife yesterday there is talk (by a local government worker) of closing the ferry's to Koh Chang, i can only presume they will operate for essential supply's, and to visit trat immigration and ambulances to Trat hospital. Resorts/bars are already closing/closed. Take Care All
