Thailand reports 54 new COVID-19 infections

 

 

Thailand reported 54 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, bringing the total number of cases to 2,423.

 

52 people were also discharged having made a full recovery. A total of 940 people have now been discharged.

 

Thailand also reported 2 more deaths bringing the total number of deaths to 32.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand reported 54 new coronavirus cases and 2 more deaths on Thursday, including a 74-year-old French national.

 

An 82-year-old Thai man also died, said a spokesman for the government's Center for CoVID-19 Situation Administration.

 

The new cases include five Thais repatriated from Indonesia who had traveled to South Sulawesi province for a religious gathering last month before the event was postponed.

 

Thailand has reported a total of 2,423 cases and 32 fatalities, while 940 patients have recovered and gone home since the outbreak started in January.

I hope the first step is to at least open up the restaurants and keep chairs well apart.

Just wonder how long they can keep all the anxious tourists out.

Unless their is a test available for every person, there will always be a risk.

Looking good. Community transmission is what we should be worried about at the moment, not people bringing it into the country from abroad, so you can discount the five cases coming back from Indonesia. There were also six Thais who came back from Japan and tested positive on Wednesday and can be discounted too. That leaves just 43 cases that may or may not have been the result of community transmission within Thailand. No doubt we'll get a further breakdown in due course, but it looks promising to me.

Yesterday over 100 because many sick Thais came back from Indonesia.

Again, good news. No exponential increases like other countries have seen. Yesterday's increase was solely down to the 40 - 50 of the cases returning from Indonesia. 

 

As long as there isn't another explosion of related cases like the Lumpini Boxing Stadium then this is seeming to be controllable at the moment.

Looks good... but they don't test many people. So that means the numbers will always be low and there is a lot of stuff hidden. I do believe its not that bad otherwise hospitals would be overflowing with deaths and it does not happen.

 

I have my doubt for testing in provinces other then BKK, Nothaburi, Chonburi, and Phuket. The facilities in many of the other provinces are not that good and all tests have to go to BKK. So I have my doubts.

There's a good piece on the Bangkok Post website at the moment, but we're not allowed to quote it here so you'll have to look for it yourself, about the CCSA defending the tests. South Korea has carried out almost ten times as many tests as Thailand, yet the overall rate of infection found among those tested is roughly the same as Thailand's (2.19% versus 2.8%) so it doesn't look like they're missing vast numbers here. Of course, it would be nice to test far more people, and they probably will as the pressure to do so mounts. At the moment, though, their limited, targeted testing doesn't seem to be doing too badly. Keep in mind that no country knows the true numbers infected, it's not just a Thai problem.

Hard to believe that 10 Provinces don't have a single confirmed case...????

What about all the people coming and going through porous Borders; and there are plenty of them ?

considering that many offices and most factories are still operating and hospitals are working normal, it is truly amazing and positive.

Of course they are missing large numbers if its 2,19% of population say 65.0000.000 = 1,423,500 cases vs the number of cases they have now. If your saying the percentage number is correct i can agree with you. But there are many more cases that go undetected that is for sure.

According to worldometer yesterday 71860 tests carried out, exactly the same as today, however, just over 20000 total tests 2 days ago. Please pull the right leg my left ones about 12 inches longer now

Can they not give a daily how many tested statistic in relation to the positives,also the location of the new cases daily.

 

The more forthcoming with information they are the more their people will begin to trust in them.

 

We had a government statement instructing private hospitals to test and treat freely without charge, followed by Hua Hin hospital spokesman proudly announcing their 3k to 5k baht charges etc and Bangkok hospital 25k promotion test.

 

We promise to make masks freely available nationwide at normal prices along with sanitizer no one will be allowed to profiteer etc.

However difficult to find sanitizer and masks when available at least 20baht.

 

So many conflicting statements, better to stop the announcements.

 

Clarity and honesty with a dash of reality would be great!

Yes it certainly is not as bad as in other countries. You can spress numbers of infections but not deaths. That would be too hard with social media and all. So all in all Thailand is doing a good job.

Nothing to do with testing population - to do with rate of infection among those tested. And that is far lower with testing only about 500 a day - population grows more than that every day

Who gets tested? How is it determined who gets the test? People that have some sort of symptom and go to a hospital or doctor about it?

Last night on Thai PBS World, they spoke about hiding numbers. They said with social media, it is too hard to do as if things were bad and people getting sick left right and center, Twitter and Facebook would be awash with information. They cannot suppress it.

 

I think the numbers coming out are real in what they want to show but as I said yesterday, they are not testing enough people due to cost and they are just focus testing on subgroups now. I think Thailand is doing a good job but more testing needs to be done. My wife told me of one person on Twitter that had a high temp, had returned from Russia recently, and was not tested.

 

People like that should not fall through the cracks and need to be tested.

I remember back in February before things kicked off here, a friend of mine in China shared an editorial warming that covid19 would hit Thailand badly because of poor personal hygiene habits. Fast forward to now and most Thais are taking it extremely seriously and doing all the things that Chinese are doing - like wearing face masks and religiously applying hand gel/sanitizer. I'm also heartened to see 7-11s checking people's temperature and Big C/Tewsco doing the same thing.

0 or 1 or 5 or 10 known cases what difference does it make? there's no wild increase in numbers hospitals are not overflowing with people dying or temple funerals. do you have any advice for usa, italy, spain, france??

Wow, you're mixing up everything.

 

1. Worldometer isn't a primary source. It's a website aggregating data mostly coming from news. So the 71,860 was updated yesterday because that's what was announced by a Thai official. There was no announcement on this number today so it remains the same on worldometer. It doesn't mean there was 0 tests.
2. Nobody ever said they did 20,000 tests 2 days ago. What was said was "there's a capacity of 20,000 tests". This is probably the overall capacity of the country in terms of Lab machines. However they're still VERY far from that (same person mentioned current rate of about 2,000 daily tests) most probably because not only you need the machines, but you need the lab people to actually be trained to handle infectious diseases, the lab to be properly sealed and the whole logistics of bringing in and reporting tests to be managed.

So your argument is that they are basically imposing what amounts to a "Quality Control" or "QC" type checking system where they are basically sampling high risk people and extrapolating from that and that this is an accurate picture of what's going on? 

 

This takes some massive leaps of faith here, let alone believing that the people releasing the information are doing so in a transparent way, and not a manipulative way. 

 

Seems to me to be statistically impossible that Thailands cases and deaths are so low when they had millions and millions of chinese tourists even coming from Whuhan. 

 

Thailands numbers would be a statistical anomaly in a sea of hard statistics.
