Trump says ‘germ is so brilliant antibiotics can’t keep up with it’ in chaotic White House coronavirus meeting

I think antibiotics are aiding in the pneumonia caused by the virus. If that is wrong feel free to tell me. But I seem to be hearing about various antibiotics being used every day from multiple sources.

They are being used judiciously in combination to fight the inflammation and secodary infections caused, as well as to hopefully strenghten the immune system to hopefully stem replication of the virus, by assisting the immune system to stop the virus "hooking onto" healthy cells. They themselves also may cause unintended consequences in the individuals organs

Unfortunately, using facts against a Trump supporter is as effective as using antibiotics against a virus.  The best approach is to socially isolate them.

  • SARS-Cov-2 is a virus, so antibiotics have no effect. Did Trump not say a few weeks ago that he understood this stuff?

the difference is the country is depending on mr trump to deal with the virus situation.

he really needs to get his **** together and stop playing reality teevee star.  time to set aside the petty vindictiveness, stop pretending it's all about him all the time.  he can open the briefings, then let the experts take over.  sit down and shut up.

Correct, but not, as claimed by trump and his followers here, to fight the virus itself.

Most high school students understand  antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections

DJT is the one holding the press conferences not JB.

It is not about pedentry it about incompetence, the ability to lead and deliver a consistent message.

Macrolide antibiotics have antiviral properties including Azithromycin and Erythromycin.

Been know for years, just like Chloroquine had been studied for SARS-1 for 15 years.

https://www.hindawi.com/journals/mi/2012/649570/

Some established literature: azithromycin antiviral

No one expects Trump to have deep medical knowledge. Given that, he often seems smarter than many of his attackers.

BTW, viruses are germs.  "There are two main types of germs which can cause disease in humans and animals. These are bacteria and viruses."

Correct, but even high school students know the difference between viral and bacterial infections.

He is the "leader" and has no intelligent nor consistent narrative, in spite of his claim of smarter than others, and failing to even take on board basic medical information.

His incompetence in leadership, his partisan attitudes to non Rep governors and his threats towards others is a reflection of a person out of their depth.

This crisis should be beyond pettiness irrespective of party politics

It's not just Trump. Funding for science and medical research can't compete with 'essential' things like wars (great for business) and tax cuts for billionaires (great for business). This article refers to virus research funding cuts going back to 2010.

BTW, viruses are germs.  "There are two main types of germs which can cause disease in humans and animals. These are bacteria and viruses."

The trials have had mixed results over the years, so much so that nowhere is azithromycin recommended to treat viral infections. At the moment everything is being thrown at this virus because it has no known cure.

"Our in vitro approaches indicated that progeny virus replication was remarkably inhibited by treating viruses with azithromycin before infection; however, azithromycin administration after infection did not affect this process".

"The macrolides may reduce the IL-8 levels in the airway and plasma, but failed to demonstrate an antiviral effect in children with bronchiolitis".

The combination of azithromycin, an immunomodulator, with oseltamivir was compared to oseltamivir monotherapy in a lethal BALB/c model of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 infection. Groups of 14-16 mice received oral oseltamivir (10 mg/kg once daily for 5 days, starting at day 2 post-inoculation) alone or combined to azithromycin (a single 100 mg/kg dose, injected intraperitoneally at day 3 post-inoculation).

Based on survival rates, lung viral titers, and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, the combination therapy did not provide obvious additional clinical/virological benefits over oseltamivir monotherapy.

My feeling on this is that is bewilderment from much of the rest of the world regarding the incumbent of the WH, sadness for average American. Hope for intelligent change or at least a person who listens to the advisors and is less narcisistic, able to deliver a cohernt narrative, also without childish ideas of granduer.

I understand what you are saying here. But please consider the ultimate aims of the medical experts are not 100% aligned with the ultimate aims of the President. Medics want to save their patients lives, end of story. Trump as President is trying to save American lives, as well as trying to save American jobs, the wider economy, and the American way of life. The latter issues are irrelevant for medics, yet consider that without jobs, laws and a country to call home, the anarchy that fills the void will be more dangerous than the virus. A difficult situation, but this is why Trump doesn't just let medics dictate the best policy, because their best policy is not necessarily the best way to save lives in the long run.

Luckily Trump, with his business acumen and street smarts is able to weigh up the information available and come to (hopefully) the best course of action. Rather than spewing hatred and negativity all day, to support the President would be a more patriotic and helpful stance.

The only course of action Trump cares about is that which benefits himself and his immediate family. I can't say friends, because he has none. Everybody is expendable to Trump.

Trump worships himself. That is evident from every sentence he utters - it's all about me, me, me... You may find that an appealing trait. Lots of Americans seem to, for some unfathomable reason.

Meanwhile. he is trashing the constitution and the reputation of his country for profit and likes.

this is not a question of who makes the final decisions.  this is about the public face of the response.  why is it important for trump to proclaim his health briefings get higher ratings than the final episode of the bachelor?  the man has no dignity.

i'm surprised he doesn't cut to commercial breaks with "five ways the virus is killing your children, coming up, after this word from our sponsors."

Because the “Ratings” of my News Conferences etc. are so high, “Bachelor finale, Monday Night Football type numbers” according to the@nytimes, the Lamestream Media is going CRAZY. “Trump is reaching too many people, we must stop him.” said one lunatic. See you at 5:00 P.M.!

Every country has idiots. But in most countries people don't vote for them to be president.

And in most countries with free press they call a duck a duck and an idiot an idiot.

And then there is America, the land of the free. Amazing!

And there is a good chance that Americans will vote for him again for another 4 years. Why? Unbelievable, but true...

And yet it isn't really unbelievable at all. In much the same way the UK wanted out of the EU, Americans want out of the global agenda. They no longer believe in the grand experiment nor the way everything is headed. There are many reasons for this, and Tainter describes them in Collapse of Complex Societies, but everyone can sense that things were better in the past, and that they are slowly getting worse.

It isn't that people don't know what Trump is. It is that he is the only candidate who offered genuine change, so they took it. Now, the Democrats have put up Biden, aka Hillary 2.0, as his competition. I'm at a loss for words. Trump's bungling is not the issue.  If he wants to confuse a virus a bacteria that is not an unforgivable sin. The burning issue is the growing need to turn away from the global agenda. Only Trump offers even a hint that might be possible.

The question that remains though, is whether Trump's handling of this pandemic will be so unacceptable that he will beat himself in the upcoming election. Will the American people forgive him for causing so much economic destruction in the last few weeks? That is a question only November can answer.

Seems to me that it’s Trump (and his supporters) that’s been the one spewing hatred the last few years. His biggest achievement - dividing America - will be recorded accordingly in the history books as the beginning of the end for America as the strongest superpower in the world. All empires ultimately fall and Trump will go down in history as the worst president there ever was.
