Popular Post rooster59 Posted April 18, 2020 Popular Post Posted April 18, 2020 The week that was in Thailand news: Faith, Hope and Charity - Buddha gets an even coating of gold leaf! One of the earliest and most enduring proverbs I encountered in Thailand was "Pit Thong Lang Phra" - applying gold leaf to the back of a Buddhist image. The expression refers to those people who do good needs without shouting about it, doing good by stealth. Thailand is no different to the rest of the world in that there are quiet philanthropists who do an enormous amount of good behind the scenes alongside others who see charity work as a means of self-promotion best done in the full glare of the public eye and the cameras. As Thailand continued to battle the coronavirus pandemic this week there were many slathering on the gold in full view and some applying it a little more secretly. And there were fresh calls from the government for Thaicoons to do more, much more. Rooster is someone who puts great store by the expression that "Charity Begins at Home" meaning that one should look after one's family first. Having brought four children into the world and provided for most of their needs I feel I have done my sterling bit for humanity. I am not a great contributor to charities though I have set up some projects in Thailand for school children to appreciate and help the needy. I believe that practical help rather than cash handouts are usually better. I am a frequent visitor to "Charity Shops" in the UK high streets on holidays in my hometown of London. Not because I want to give money to the charity. I want something cheap! When OXFAM started overcharging for used paperbacks I stopped going into their stores. I'll show the starving in Africa who's boss by buying new. I once had a long relationship with a Filipina called Charity who I met in Sydney. She had a twin sister called Faith. But there was no Hope - Thailand intervened. In the kingdom this week soup kitchens and charitable handouts were becoming more prevalent. Perhaps inspired by the Thai government's hopeless shambles that is the 5,000 baht monthly unemployment payments. PM Prayut - who looks battered, bruised and tired and every inch out of his depth - couldn't get his story straight about what the handouts meant, who was eligible and how much money he had. Millions applied but the great majority were either told they were not eligible or would have to wait until they starved. Prayut came out to say that only a few would get the money after all. Then like he had suddenly remembered his lines he reemerged to change tack and say he'd be doling out trillions after all. This leader has lost it. He is surrounded by a huge cast of incompetents. Many are very rich politicians with billions in assets who have done what the British refer to as 'squat all' for their compatriots save going to their mansions for some diamond encrusted self-isolation. Yesterday - as dozens of stories filled the news columns playing up the kindness of Thais to compatriots and foreigners - Prayut, grumbled about his rich pals. Mindful of the fact that this semi-retired general hasn't got the first clue about economics let alone how much money he has to hand out, Uncle Too went on the offensive against Thailand "Top 20 Tycoons" to get them to contribute more. Contribute something. Some are tycoons in retail. You can't tell this columnist with a straight face that they are not doing very nicely out of the crisis. If some have lost a few hundred million on the stock market they're not in penury and will get it all back with interest in the long haul. Prayut is right to speak out even if it's a convenient smokescreen for his ineptitude. In America as deaths topped 30,000 President Trump was not feeling charitable to his main adversary of the last seven days (having a go at reporters doesn't count). The WHO. The POTUS went on Google and found out that its leader was a person called Roger Daltrey aided and abetted by someone called Moon who did real drugs not pharmaceuticals. He decided to cut funding. This drew criticism from a philanthropist who has done much good in his time. Bill Gates once even got the ball rolling on getting the pesky hanging wires of Thailand buried after taking holiday snaps of messy cables outside his Bangkok hotel window. Mr Gates's public profile means he is not someone who can put the gold leaf on the back of the Buddha and get away with it. He and his wife's philanthropy has resulted in help for many worthwhile causes. Strategies he advocated and encouraged resulted in many other multi-billionaires pledging half their wealth. The tycoons of Thailand are filthy rich and should be taking a leaf out of Mr Gates' book. There were many cases of large crowds of unemployed and desperate Thais seeking help. Private businesses and charitable individuals offered money and essentials. The authorities kept an eye on the lack of social distancing but "Hey! This is Charidy" (as Harry Enfield's DJ character used to say). Who were they to deny the people money and some 'phat krapao'. Bangkok gov'nor Asawin asked people to tell him first after the Don Muang area ground to a halt when rice and cash was handed out at a temple. In Pattaya the owners of the Rom Pho market distributed 200 baht to each person until their 500K was used up. Meanwhile, in what has become almost like a sideshow to the devastating economic impact of the pandemic came the numbers. The numbers of confirmed cases, deaths, recoveries, tests, reinfections, PUIs. The numbers spin round in our heads with different interpretations from "experts" creating more confusion. The upshot, in Thailand at least, is that cases have dropped off and if the figures are to be believed, we may be on our way to an easing of the various lockdowns, bans and prohibitions in place in the kingdom at the moment. (I stop to appreciate how strange life now is; that such incredible measures that have been introduced in Thailand and around the world are accepted as commonplace!) My own gut feeling is that I shall probably be mostly marooned in my condo with the wife and kids right the way through May. Perhaps emerging a little in June..... Indeed, the buzzword phrase of the international media this week was "exit strategy" or how governments plan to lift measures designed to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Given human nature they quite naturally fear a free-for-all once we are released from our cells. There is genuine concern throughout the world that lifting restrictions too soon could be a disaster that might make the current economic calamity wielded by the pandemic seem like chump change. The charity theme continued in Bangkok where a well known local celeb-cum-philanthropist who runs a cheap clinic in Banglamphu took pity on a 66 year old German with barely a pfennig to his name. The Teutonic Tourist impressed the Thai with his patter resulting in the handing over of 1,000 baht and a cheery parting to meet again for lunch on Sunday. Cue a mountain of comments both on and off thread. Nobody escaped the outpouring of vitriol! Personally I am a bit dubious of people who post on Facebook - particularly on their business page - when they do a good deed. Besides, they are taking up valuable bandwidth that we could fill with proud pictures of our homemade dinners. On an average week I translate about 60 stories. In recent weeks 50 plus either started with Covid-19 or contained coronavirus. I got a bit carried away with a headline about a creature that was found near the Thai/Myanmar border that looked a bit like a flying fox. Netizens were worrying about Chinese/Bats/Incurable Lurgy, so Rooster went with "No, it's not a Covid-19 Mutant Bat". James Robert Gill on Facebook wins my Post of the Week prize for his dry observation: And this week's "Tenuous Link to Covid" award goes to.... Guilty as charged. But still the Covid-19 stories came, still us noble translators struggled to stay awake as yet another angle of the same narrative was explored. It was almost a relief when farang baiting,Thai hating health minister Anutin put his head above Prayut and Prawit's Parapet. This time the Loony Tunes DPM had a go at fellow Bhumjaithai MP Boonkua for saying that "stupid citizens will lead us to death". Suspecting Anutin's penchant for a weight increasing beverage and recognizing that his busy schedule would preclude much chance of slimming down with exercise, I can only conclude that his comments are akin to the pot belly calling the kettle black. Of course, Anutin no longer has a busy schedule after being sidelined for his own tirades. He looks persona non grata when it comes to public health, not exactly what a public health minister craves. He'll doubtless emerge in another guise later. Thai politicians who are lucky enough not to have been jailed for life always do. Meanwhile some better Thai medical experts have been holding the briefings and issuing the advice; I repeat my general observations of recent weeks that the Thais are doing as well and as poorly as many governments and peoples around the world. If Uncle Too doesn't know how much money he has then Uncle Toupee in the White House doesn't know how much power he has. In a busy week in Washington the incumbent questioned the power of the states, started an "Opening Up America Again" project and promised to "liberate" the Democrat held states of Michigan and Virginia. Not that I would ever dream of gambling in Thailand, but the biggest international betting exchange in the world has odds of evens against Trump being reelected. In my opinion he's the biggest certainty since Hilary Clinton was last time..... In the realms of the queer and quirky and plain stupid were the following Thai news items: 1. A Thai man asked to be taken into prison so he could get three square meals a day. 2. 100,000 hardcore alcoholics were suffering and disadvantaged during the booze ban. 3. A "serial drunkard" pegged out from drinking moonshine - his mum did warn him. 4. A guy forgot his motorcycle and went home for a kip after trying to incinerate an ATM with a gas canister. 5 ........and Pattaya tried to impose a lockdown again. Finally, fair play to Thaivisa for teaming up with the Samaritans who have been offering their advice and help in Thailand for more than four decades. Their valuable work could be especially important at times like this when there is so much disruption to lives, substantial mental anguish and understandable worry about health, money and the future. They are unlikely to get a call from Rooster, however. Perhaps a bit like my charitable inclinations I am the sort of person that looks elsewhere for mental health assistance. Unless, that is, they can tell me when live sports will be broadcast again. Having no EPL and no snooker is driving me nuts! Popular Post Samui Bodoh Posted April 18, 2020 Popular Post Posted April 18, 2020 An interesting read as always; cheers, mate. "... On an average week I translate about 60 stories. But still the Covid-19 stories came, still us noble translators struggled to stay awake as yet another angle of the same narrative was explored..." I could not agree more. I do not blame TVF or other news organizations, but the tedium and repetitiveness of the content has gotten to me. That said, today had a story of a projected NASA rocket launch! Whoo-Hoo! One of my favourite subjects; as the saying goes, thank you three times. I don't pay as much attention to the news as I used to as I am unable to 'sink my teeth' into news stories about the virus anymore. The simple fact is that, despite all the informed/educated speculation, there is no way to know with any accuracy when countries will end the social/medical measures, or to what degree they will be eased/dropped, what the interaction(s) will look like on a global scale (this virus is NOT a local phenomenon) and how things will look if/when it finally occurs. In light of that, I am unable to speculate/project/make educated guesses/etc about what will come next, so I don't really try. I just hope that those in authority, in Thailand and beyond, make the best possible decisions and that we all get out from this sooner rather than later and in one piece. To sum up; it blows. In lieu of speculating about the future, I often share stories with a few old mates at the beach while swimming (on Koh Samui, the beaches are open); we all have stories which begin "One night in Bangkok...". I suspect that the entire roster of TVF members have at least several similar stories, and a few members have hundreds. Yes, "One night in Bangkok..." stories, especially from back in the day, might contain references to copious amounts of whiskey and beer, three-eyed sloths, run-in(s) with police, haggling with street vendors, tales of groping with a surprise or two, dancing bears or elephants, meetings with... er... ex-CIA/ex-Special Forces guys at the bar, nudity in all the wrong places, Connect Four, seedy hotels/apartments, further haggling with whoever, truck loads of alcohol, tales of wild taxi/tuk-tuk rides, roof top/riverside sunrises, wild and groovy sex, even more haggling about something, etc; given what we all know of Bangkok, the list of possible elements in a story is frankly endless. However, ALL the stories will, at some point, include two things; the song "One night in Bangkok..." and hot dancing girls. So, in order to prompt the memories and allow you to share a story or two with your mates, I give you an up-dated remix version of "One night in Bangkok..." with some hot dancing girls. It is medicine for mental health and comfort against cabin-fever. Enjoy! 9 5 1

The one I was taught (Primitive Wesleyan Methodist mother and tough-as-nails agnostic coal hewer father) is that children learn to be charitable from their parents. In other words "Charity is learnt at home". I never heard the expression "applying gold leaf to the back of the Buddha image" before, but it really does describe very well the act of giving without thought of reward. Great read as always Rooster, thanks. 1

I hope you've got Pat. Pending on it. At the time of the US election that saw Uncle Toupee elected, I said to my Septic friend that I'd like to see him win: I have no interest in US politics at all, but I said it purely for the entertainment value he would provide, having seen him speaking. I haven't been disappointed. Thanks again for your caustic wit. 2

I'm a Brit, and I'm sure lots of our American cousins see a similar thing in their own country. The proliferation of fast food joints does seem to have coincided with there being more overweight people in Thailand. Unlike some, I won't descend to name calling if someone doesn't agree. 1
