Anti-Covid measures also effective against other diseases, says leading virologist

Dr Yong Poovorawan

Dr Yong Poovorawan, a virologist from Chulalongkorn University, says that measures imposed to deal with Covid-19 had also been effective in stopping the spread of influenza and other respiratory contagions, and also digestive diseases.

Dr Yong is regarded as one of the country’s leading experts on H5N1 avian influenza, having fought the 2004 bird flu outbreak by sequencing and aiding detection of the virus.

Studies in Taiwan and Singapore showed that cases of respiratory disease had decreased by around 50 percent over the past few months, compared to the last three years, said the Emerging Infectious Disease (EID) journal.

Since the Covid-19 outbreak, there have been far fewer reported cases of both influenza and patients with severe respiratory complications, the virologist said on Facebook on Tuesday (April 28). The phenomenon has also occurred in Thailand, he added.

Moreover, he said that cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease caused by the coxsackievirus A-16 would not be seen among children when schools reopened.

The doctor added that the drop in the number of flu cases meant health budget had been saved and could now be spent helping current patients.

Covid-19 preventive measures in place in Thailand include the lockdown, social distancing and hygiene advice to wear face masks and wash hands frequently.

I'm pretty sure you'll have a large increase in people with weight gain, leading to obesity and possible diabetes, by closing parks, gyms, swimming pools etc., with boredom also leading to more eating !

This is true in our house.  My SO cannot keep her head out of the fridge.  Eats all day long.  Then when she stands on the scales (every day) all I hear is aaaargh!

Yes, and nature is doing better without the tourists and other benefits. On the other hand, the economic crash will causes suicides, stress that will cause early deaths, etc.

If only people could work from home .. as some can do in countries that have placed high value on education and moving people up the value chain. Something nigh impossible in a country with the largest wealth gap in the world.

Which country would thart be? Obviosuly, you didn't look up any statistics on that. The USA has a wider wealth gap than Thailand - based on the UN R/P 20% statisitics. South Africa is the least equitable, ranked 1, USA 35th, Thailand 87th.

Credit Suisse placed Thailand as #1: https://www.aseantoday.com/2019/01/thailands-wealth-inequality-is-the-highest-in-the-world-what-does-this-mean-for-upcoming-elections/

In general, the countries with higher education levels are the Nordics. And indeed many do work from home there right now. The jobs that require low skilled manual labor have been automated away, nobody is <deleted> up in the fields anymore. Many work purely through the internet.

Basic hygiene is obviously important. But we need to get exposed to indigenous germs from infancy in order to build an effective immunity system. Locking people up for weeks on end has the opposite effect and is stoking a future epidemic of mental, as well as other, health problems.

The best way to fight all these nasties is with a healthy body and strong immune system.

Eat well. Drink in moderation. Exercise regularly and stop worrying about catching something.

That can be fixed, Lots off bed room Exercises ( if you can)

They have found that an hour of romance between the sheets burns almost as many calories as a 30-minute jog and so should be taken into account when drawing up a fitness plan.  ????

Indeed, the way nature intended!

Some good news out there though :-

Flu season has ended. According to the CDC, an estimated 24,000 Americans have died from the flu this season—down from 80,000 flu deaths in 2018.

It’s a miracle! ????

...it's about time the modern world got its' act together with personal and general hygiene, particularly in the filthy food outlets that we see everywhere. High time the Thai Health Department picked up on this and aggressively check and inspect all facets of food production from the farm to the vendor.

you've cracked it sherlock

He is correct, the phenomenon has occurred in NZ with far fewer flue cases.

I put this down to the spraying of supermarket trolleys and people using hand sanitizers.

I have heard doctors say many times that supermarkets are great spreaders of colds because you grab a trolley and eventually touch your nose or rub your eyes.

People are also wearing masks and washing hands, and this I think-- as it has been a talkback radio subject just lately, and doctors here have said this may be the Reason for the decrease in flue.

Isn't this statement kind of obvious? Not as many people are going to catch infectious diseases if they're all maintaining distance and wearing masks. And it'd be practically impossible to catch any cocksuckyvirus from 1½ metres away.

Forgive my cynicism, but this seems to me to be a completely useless piece of puff journalism. It achieves nothing useful, it does not inform, and simply appears to be a way of getting somebody's name and photograph in the paper.

Ain't Thailand wonderful?
