Record fund-raiser Colonel Tom Moore, 100, is knighted

LONDON (Reuters) - Colonel Tom Moore, who became a national hero in Britain after raising £33 million for the National Health Service in the run-up to his 100th birthday, is to be knighted.

 

Moore becomes “Sir Tom” after a special nomination from Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

 

The World War Two veteran raised the world record sum by painstakingly completing 100 laps of his garden with the aid of a walking frame.

 

“Colonel Tom’s fantastic fundraising broke records, inspired the whole country and provided us all with a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus,” Johnson said on Tuesday.

 

“On behalf of everyone who has been moved by his incredible story, I want to say a huge ‘thank you.’ He’s a true national treasure.”

 

The honour is the latest bestowed on Moore. For his 100th birthday last month, Queen Elizabeth agreed that he should be made an honorary colonel and he was also made an honorary member of the England cricket team.

 

He holds the Guinness World Record for the most money raised by an individual through a walk.

Yes, but the 4 which he has got:1939-1945 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945 mean something, especially the Burma Star!

Many years ago I was working at a language school and they sent me to a Thai government (primary) school which they had a contract for.

At the end of my first week the primary school contacted my employers and asked for another teacher.

I had upset the head mistress by continually asking her which war she got her medals in (she was wearing about 15 medal ribbons on her uniform).

I had to earn mine, so I was not about to keep my mouth shut.

 

BTW, congratulations to Sir Tom and thank you for your long service to the UK free world.

His official title will be Captain Sir Tom Moore. His honorary Colonel award can not be used in his official title.  God bless you sir.

Actually, the UK has many, many medals given to civilians not attributed to war.

He's class, brushed off the Colonel part, said it was a nice gesture but not a proper rank.

A couple of years ago the private schools in my neck of the woods got together and all decided that their staff would wear uniform -on Mondays. Black trouser/skirt. white shirt, dark blue shoulder boards with silver braid "bars" as rank badges, medals and of course in many (often astonishing cases) parachute wings!

 

I was exempted, I think they realised that I didn't like the idea when I kept mistaking them for Sombat Tour bus drivers! A colleague, who worked mornings in one school and afternoons with us, was provided with a uniform, along with a laminated set of 6 medal ribbons, by his "morning school". He freely admitted that he didn't know what they represented, but neither did any of the Thai teachers we asked! Some (older) glared at us for being impertinent, some looked embarrassed, and the younger ones just giggled!

He's certainly done a lot more to deserve this honour than many who receive similar.

Here in the UK we already have one: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
