Govt slams criticism of move to extend state of emergency

The government has slammed as "illogical" insinuations that the extension of the state of emergency for a month was a way for the prime minister to tighten his hold on power.

 

On Thursday (May 21), the National Security Council (NSC) said that it would ask the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration to extend the state of emergency for another month until June 30. The news led to criticism in a section of the people that it was a move to entrench the PM's administration in power.

 

Government Spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat on Friday (May 22) slammed the criticism as illogical.

 

The spokeswoman explained that the NSC is extending the state of emergency since it could save people’s lives from the Covid-19 risk.

 

"I believe that people would understand the reason for extending the state of emergency," she said, adding the third and fourth phases of lockdown relaxion would be coming soon.

To be fair to these chumps, extending it for the time being is the logical step. 

Once you've committed economic suicide it doesn't matter much

I think slamming something as "'illogical" is our governments way of pretending they are surprised when their lies are questioned. There is need to be cautious yes, but the emergency seems to be receding so extraordinary measures are themselves "'illogical."

Oops looks like they have following TV and our discussions, ok yes sarcastic remark on my part.  Life goes on in lockdown and entrenchment has occurred....

A committee is needed to form a sub committee to find if its illogical to say its illogical that's why I don't believe a word she says ????

Yeah and the application doesn't have a back door either. Everyone knows this is a military controlled government.

Extending the Emergency Decree is logical.

Extending the nonsense implemented under that decree is questionable.

I've thought all along that the primary concern of this government has been the return of the tourists, of various nationalities. Being on the safe side and missing them for another month or two is nothing compared to missing them for a couple of more years. A secondary , less worried about consideration, is that a lot of governments around the world are going to fall due to their unappreciated handling of the crisis, and this government sees no reason to risk being one of them.

Then you believe that crippling their economy will not do them any damage? If ever there was a reason for a government to fall...

Not that I don't understand the caution, but:

 

Why is the NSC dictating to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration? Should the government not be listening to the very people they are preaching to, the experts in the field, and not making suggestions?

It's totally a judgement call, since no one can know what will eventually happen. If they open too soon and the contagion takes off anew then they could be in deeper doo-doo. Obviously this government has a lot of power to quiet dissent, and they are probably still in the range where that is doable.

No one could know what would happen at the beginning of this pandemic. Now we know exactly what will happen if the contagion takes off. Old and vulnerable people will be at risk, and measures can be taken to protect them. The rest of the population can get on with their lives. The numbers are in, and they are pretty clear.

To assume that the government is not aware of thaivisa and the comments on its perfromance as well as its general attitude to thais and thailand in general is naive.

The primary goal of this ‘government’ is, and always has been, the continuation of military rule. This is paramount and takes precedence over everything else.

 

Maintaining a state of emergency (a sort of martial law lite) is a good way to emphasize rule by decree, establish new means of control and further institutionalize military authority.

 

They probably would like to to extend the 'emergency' indefinitely....if they can figure out a way to do it while keeping their income stream intact.

And if they had cancelled the state of emergency, and not extended it to June 30? Well, then, the third and fourth phases of lockdown relaxation would be axed. And this four phase approach to opening up is, to me, really sensible planning -- every 15 days, reevaluate the situation and move to the next phase accordingly. Thailand should be given credit -- and it has been -- for a systematic and well-thought out approach to this crisis. This is all uncharted territory for all countries, and it will take years to sort out whether the Swedish approach, or others, were the right way. But so far, Prayut seems to have his feet on the ground -- and so far no beer bellies with semi-automatic rifles across the chest, and with MTGA hats -- have appeared on the streets. (Yeah, yeah, yeah - junta laws, suppressing freedom, are the reason for that; but, a little silver lining in every cloud....)

I doubt that. They don't give a S**T what foreigners think. Thais are up in arms about this on social media. Many of my Thai friends have already posted stuff on their feeds critical of this decision.

Correct

Expect a cluster to be suddenly found to justify it. They can swing the numbers both ways by adjusting the confirmation test queues at the reference labs.

Yes, now it's just a matter of being honest enough to say out loud morals are too expensive, the elderly will die anyway, let's open it all up. They just don't have the guts for it and the emergency is oh so handy for suppressing unrelated uprisings

Very little risk of the "government" falling no matter what when they simply remove any opposition by whatever means necessary.

They don't even pretend to understand how democracies work. Their job isn't to tell us how something is good or bad; it's to explain why. If you can't explain why, you're simply abusing your power.

Really. So please supply the links to all the numbers and conclusions that are "in".

One thing about an emergency, brings out people's true colors.
