Pattaya: City reveals plans for Walking Street - major "mall" style makeover for Thailand's "world class resort"

But those who are in charge should push Thailand forward as a regional leader, not back in time to a big tourist detination. However, I don't think armies througout the world know how to progress things, they only know how to destroy

I think this look reflects (previously mentioned) a computer game or cartoon. As I am still a tourist type I am less jaded in my opinions and feel the best way to modernize walking street and maintain the flavour is to maintain the current facade but recondition it as we would a heritage home or shop in the west. Add minimal New York or Nevada flare, same signage and a "family friendly" zone should be at the end closest to the resorts. This design will cause problems and new avenues of crime.

I also have noticed that smell and odd taste. But I'm reliably informed that the proper dose of antibiotics taken over two weeks or so should clear things up. The clammy smell and odd taste should be gone!

All the developments you mention are not far enough imo

 

for the safety of the families and the tranquility of the mongers

they should be relocated at least 10\20 kms away from Pattaya.

Na Jomtiem was a good choice and Ban saray is the perfect area,

plus the beach is nice.

 

Mom and dad don't want to see hookers when they go out for a walk on 

beach road, and the punters don't want to see children in their adult play area

and as far as i know the punters were here first

Penang turned George Town into a world heritage site .... Great success.

 

That is what they should do with Walking street .. When was the highlight years ?  Fix the broken street and pavement .. but revert everything back to what it was in the highlight year .....

 

Then apply for 'World Heritage Status' .... ???? ....  I am willing to bet it will be a great success!  The last thing 'we' need is more modern glass and neon lights ....

I'm curious. What would you suggest they replace Washington Square with. I must confess that I can't remember why it was all demolished, although I did venture there once or twice to eat. But wasn't it mostly just a hangout for the ageing American expats, and as their numbers fell away so did the viability of the Square?

 

It does seem that a golden opportunity to use the area for something original has been missed, but really - what could it be used for? I'm trying to think of how other cities around the world use their spaces, but they really are mostly shops and hotels, just like Bangkok. There is a park close by, so that isn't needed in the area. And mostly parks are little used during most of the day anyway as it's too hot to linger or exercise.

 

A water park might be fun, with a wave machine and beach. That's the best I can come up with. The Chinese are good at building that sort of thing so there'd be no problem attracting Chinese money to finance it and those hoards of visitors that Thailand believe are waiting at the borders ready to rush in as soon as the doors are opened. Goldmine.

   Well, apparently Terminal 21 thought it was far enough, as did all the other developments I mentioned and the many others I didn't list.   I don't think the 'punters were here first' argument will get much traction but there seems to be places aplenty for everyone's interests and the more the merrier.

I think it makes sense to get rid of the old structures and build something more modern since the younger generation and the new type of traveler expects a “newer” look. But... the city needs to seriously zone sections of the city for bars/ entertainment / residential... And when will casinos be allowed. That would put a boost in the economy.

And how do you think they could do that? These "old structures" are private properties, often with high value, and owners often are rich important and influent families.

Plus all on the sea side were built illegaly on a public non building land

(Aka the beach) and they have since posed a threat to the environment
