Thirteen tonnes of marijuana that cannot be used for research and medical purposes were destroyed in Ayutthaya province on Friday (June 12).

The event was jointly presided over by Ayutthaya deputy governor Pornphot Bundittayanurak and Niyom Termsrisuk, secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB).

The marijuana had been confiscated from drug dealers and users by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau of the Royal Thai Police. It could not be used for research and medical purposes due to contamination with other chemicals, fungus and having heavy metal volume higher than normal standard.

“The marijuana must be destroyed with pyrolytic incineration method at 850 degrees Celsius,” said Pol Maj-General Mongkhol Waruno, deputy chief of Narcotics Suppression Bureau. “The burning at this high temperature will not cause air pollution or any environmental impact.”

The Thai government has allowed the use of marijuana only for research and medical purposes, while recreational use is still illegal.

Some 10 years ago I witnessed the burning of a similar huge amount in Ubon.

But not by pyrolytic incineration method at 850 degrees, but by using the old-fashioned just burn it method.  As it was in the middle of the big square at the Police stand put up during the Ubon festival, everybody on that crowded square enjoyed the equivalent of a Mega Reefer.

Bokasha!
