Heard it all before. The truly rich would not visit in sufficient numbers. They're not stupid and thousands of destinations have nice beaches. They prefer stable places with non-commie governments. Thailand's best bet at a spectacular revival is to stick to what it is good at and eat a huge slice of humble pie. The people are suffering.

Me too, and for me there's no comparison, Thailand beats the <deleted> out of Spanish beaches. 

 

And if you stay at a 5 star resort in Thailand with a private beach, well, there's no way any beach in Spain or resort can get even close to it, mainly because beaches in Spain just don't have the natural beauty that Thai beaches have. Even the water is colder in Spain.

 

But anyways, you have your opinion and I have mine, but I'm pretty sure lots of really wealthy people also prefer Thailand over Spain, there's a reason why Thailand is full of high quality 5 star resorts. It's not just backpackers in Pattaya's dirty beaches.

I love this post because it really does bring some reality to the comments being made in this thread. Posters trashing Thailand as a destination but claiming to understand what the rich people need and where they go, whilst living here....oh no, Thailand is a sh*t hole and the wealthy would never come here, never mind the fact that I live here and know what rich people want.......the irony of it all.

 

It also magnifies the extent to which many farangs play up the poverty side of Thailand yet never balance it with the the other sides....the poor, the hungry, unemployed and down trodden. Is this a reflection of where they spend a majority of their time and who they hang out with, is that all they ever see  and how come they never see the other side? Whilst there is a segment of poor people in Thailand, just as there is in every country, there is also a very large middle class and an ever growing upper class and there is a lot of wealth inside both those groups and a lot of normal also.

 

Perhaps this is a case of foreigners projecting, they look at them and realise their own circumstances are not as secure as they'd like. Just like the arguments about the strength of the Baht, posters tell us they fear for exports and the tourist trade if the Baht stays strong when really they're saying, jeeze, I wish the Baht would weaken because my lifestyle is getting stretched!

If I were rich, I wouldn't be taking holidays here.

I live in a Thai middle class gated village, they're all one or two pay checks from repossession.

 

As for 'circumstances are not secure', I don't think any foreigners circumstances are secure in Thailand, look at all the people who were outside when the borders closed, doesn't matter what VISA they have, nobody is letting them in.

That's the thing, rich is a relative term, there's a load of different levels of rich between Bill Gates and Somchai. I know of at least two forum members who have assets in the teens of millions of dollars, that's not unusual in this day and age, both live here to avoid tax and live very nice lifestyles....are they rich?

I haven't worked since I was 45 (20 years), I don't have millions of dollars.

But can afford a nice house to live in, a younger woman in my bed, and plenty of foreign holidays.

I consider not having to work the very best of lifestyles.

 

Just wish the borders would open so I could continue my foreign holidays.

This is a great idea. Make the rich richer and the poor poorer. Or perhaps this idiot thinks the rich medical and business travellers will go to the mom and pop shops to spend money and eat street foods.

Millions of Thais survive on the tourist dollar. Those dollars are spread thinly but evenly due to the sheer volume of visitor numbers. What they are proposing is a significant reduction in tourist numbers but an increase in spending by wealthy tourists.

 

I hope that the government is ready to cope with widespread poverty. This will be a catastrophe if it ever happens, which I seriously doubt. Thailand desperately needs foreign income. Whether it comes from old fat farangs or backpackers is immaterial. If they manage to attract the wealthy, that needs to be seen as an additional source of income, not a replacement.

 

However, Thailands recent attitude to expats, who provide foreign income, has shown us that they have no understanding and so the whole affair will be a huge balls up, as usual, or forgotten about.
