Khao San nightlife operators fear new rules will kill buzz

Operators of pubs and bars in Bangkok’s Khao San area say it will be difficult to follow the rules imposed by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) when they reopen in the next few weeks.

 

Venues and bars in the tourist hotspot are preparing to resume business after four months in lockdown.

 

A staff member at one Khao San venue revealed that the owner is now waiting anxiously to hear how the new rules will change operations. The pool table will have to be removed in line with one of the 22 requirements, while the number of tables for customers must be reduced to meet the social distancing rule.

 

Fifty per cent of the area is covered by entertainment businesses, pubs and bars, according to Sanga Ruangwattanakul, president of the Khao San Business Association.

 

He believes that entertainment operators will find it difficult to comply with about 20 per cent of the new rules, especially the limit of five people per table, since they will not know how many tourists will come at the same time.

 

The rule against singing, shouting and dancing will also be hard to impose as people visit Khao San at night to relax, he added.

 

As for the requirement that drinks be sold in glasses, not bottles, he said most visitors like to buy bottled drinks and usually don’t share them with others.

 

Meanwhile, shops and venues in the area are cleaning up and checking their sound equipment ahead of the scheduled reopening in July.

I think it would be impossible for a business to operate and adher strictly to the 22 rules.

He really means that KSR won't be the same without the backpackers and dreadlocks.

If an owner can't adhere to the rules imposed for social distancing etc.. then he should be shut down .....

No challenge is too big for the cutting edge brilliance and collective genius of the CCSA.

 

One solution might be to quarantine all visitors in their 100% pathogen-free hotel rooms. Old recordings of the Khao San of yore could then be played on in-house CCTV. This way the modern day backpackers will be able to enjoy the original, groovy “buzz’ of Khao San without ever leaving their safe, hermetically sealed and well-guarded hotel.

No, he doesn't "really" mean that. I think you've never been to KSR, actually, just like bashing what you imagine it's like nowadays.

Should be an even number... six people =3 couples or max 6 friends.. limit the table size and chairs.

Not too difficult to comply with.

If a group arrive with 5/6 + people they have to keep tables separated as apposed to pulling them together.

Hate to be a wet blanket with these reopening ideas plans etc, but as soon as you include alcohol and the frontal lobe and amygdala get nice n warm alcohol flooded then people are gunna ignore rules And it will all go to poop ???? again.

I’m in Phuket n I am now seeing lots, I mean lots of folks ignoring masks n distancing all over the shop. 
If the big boss n all them important medico folks in BKK said it’s ok we don’t need to wear them anymore then great ???? ok I’m glad cause I don’t enjoy the face covering at all, but as far as I’m aware we are required to wear them.

I admit, given what’s happening across the globe with increased infection rates in some spots (a lot) my fear that as soon as borders are opened again we’ll end up back in lockdown.

They can't come anyway. But I think the people underestimate the consequences if there really comes a bigger second wave again.

Of course if the writers of the rules had any idea they would and should have written the rules differently. However as they have likely never been to Khao San road they are following the Mad Hatters rules, an unwritten one of which is, that nobody is allowed to enjoy themselves.

 

A lesson on how not to bring happiness and reconciliation to the Thai people.

On every video from kaosarnroad you see touts promoting buckets for 150 baht....they are for sharing...and who knows what's inside?

The Department of Covid Health Dept will be enforcing this one not the BIB.

BIB only the time 5pm to 1am

Before Covid never saw the Health Dept after 5pm but these Inspectors may have learned how to save for a new car

I am wondering why not a single one is promoting it for 149 only... Seems to be a very regulated place.

Well, not a huge problem in the nearest future, as there probably will be no tourists coming – they might not be allowed inside the Kingdom – and when the tourists are coming, they might be high-end tourists from bubble-zones only, probably not many typical Khao San Road-backpackers...????

Well in that case the PM will be forced to extend the emergency decree indefinitely.

sakes you cannot play with gloves on as that would totally wreck your shot.  What a country
