Alcoholic drinks-makers see red over draft law banning online sale

The Thai Alcohol Beverage Business Association (TABBA) wants the government to consider scrapping the draft law banning online sales of alcholic beverages, arguing that it would be unfair to the beverage-makers and also restricted the basic right of consumers, said association president Thanakorn Kuptajit.

 

 

His reaction follows the National Alcoholic Beverage Policy Committee's endorsement on July 2 of the draft proposed by the PM's Office, which bans the sale of alcoholic beverages via electronic channel to prevent youth from easily accessing such products, and to reduce the impact on society of alcoholic drinks.

 

He said that the law would affect alcoholic drinks-makers who do business honestly and in line with the current law. If they cannot do business, they might have to shut down business, he warned.

 

Reacting to concerns that online sales will make it easier for youth to access the beverages, he said TABBA could get the beverage-makers to check the age of the buyers, record their information, the time of the transaction and product delivery.

 

He added that the draft was not in line with the current policy of promoting social distancing and discouraging non-essential travel.

 

He said the private businesses were willing to follow the law but wanted the law to ensure fair treatment to all.

If the underage sale is the problem then check the buyer’s age for online and in store purchases as advanced countries do.
But as seen many times before they throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Why would kids bother online when they can get it at any mom & pop store throughout Thailand? This sounds like a means to generate more brown envelopes.

I agree, first they should try to compel online buyers to provide ID when making a purchases even though this is not a fool proof and can be manipulated, butt if statistically things don't improve than go in with this law...

Done the right way it cannot be manipulated. In my home country when buying alcohol online you confirm by accepting the T/C that you are of allowed age. Alcohol is only handed out to you against signature. If the postman/delivery service thinks that you are not old enough, they are entitled to ask for an ID. The same way as you can be asked in a store.

Who will lose out by this action apart from consumers? Small independent brewers and importers and suppliers of foreign beers and wines.

 

Who will gain? The big brewers, whose profits won't be up to the usual obscene amounts due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

 

This is yet another example of the Government finding an excuse to help the elite families of Thailand.

Called a Straw purchase, just like kids asking an adult before they walk into a liquor store in the US do.  Of course you need another agency such as ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) to work on these issues as well, and do education to the populace.  Yes i said Education, I know Thai's do not listen to what they do not care too.

I think they are in business. Just try and call and you will find out. 

Anyway, I am quite sure O´glee can deliver to Pattaya. They sent to Korat one time to a friend of mine.

The usual reaction of wowsers that like to be seen as the purist of Thai citizens, who view alcohol beverages as a sin and then introduce these stupid bans that only affect a very small part of the population.

However, having mia noi/s, theft of public funds and massive corruption, differing laws for the connected and etc, is fine in their immature minds.

yeah, basic rights

I dont mind people taking alcohol (or any other drug) as long as they don't operate a vehicle or bother / endanger others. I think it should be a basic right however if you abuse it you should be punished. I don't see why the good always have to suffer because of actions by those who cant control themselves.

What do you mean then ? I my point was that all those alcohol and (soft) drug restrictions are just b.s and bother users that are responsible. I prefer them to go after those that cause trouble when high / drunk. Not those that have pint in a bar and don't do a thing or those blowing a bit and chill out assaulting a mars bar. 

 

However if any of them drive a car/bike  they should be locked up for years
