BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Egyptian Ambassador to Thailand, Laila Ahmed Bahaaeldin, to discuss the Egyptian military crew, who did not strictly observe Thailand’s measures to help limit the spread of COVID-19. The Embassy of Egypt issued a statement expressing regrets to the people of Thailand for last week’s incident, while insisting that Egypt will continue to offer its full cooperation to the Thai government.

According to the statement, the Embassy of Egypt would like to express its most sincere regrets and sympathies to all those who may have been adversely affected by this unfortunate incident.

The embassy would like to reassure the Thai public that it has been working closely with the Thai authorities to ensure swift containment and mitigation of any possible threat to public health safety, which may have been caused by this incident.

The embassy also reaffirms its strong commitment to full and strict adherence to all regulations in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Thailand.

The Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Director-General of the Department of Information, Cherdkiat Atthakor, said the statement from the Embassy of Egypt was forwarded by the Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, Dusit Manapan.

The meeting with the Egyptian Ambassador took place yesterday (July 14) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok. The Thai official informed the Egyptian diplomat that the Thai public has expressed grave concern about this incident, and asked the embassy to ensure that all Egyptian officials on missions in Thailand strictly comply with regulations and measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Egyptian Ambassador was also informed of the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration’s (CCSA) decision to deny flight clearance requests for the four upcoming Egyptian military flights for the time being.

Mr. Cherdkiat said his ministry has always coordinaed with related units, and the operations center, on overseeing inbound and outbound travelers and Thai citizens abroad, and has been working with public health agencies to implement disease-control measures.

You can start this mitigation by paying recompense to the people, businesses and institutions for their loss of income caused by this incident. But I bet, when it come to that you are just full of hot air...

"According to the statement, the Embassy of Egypt would like to express its most sincere regrets and sympathies to all those who may have been adversely affected by this unfortunate incident."

How about real cash for the many people financially affected by the soldier who has caused many people to self quarantine for two weeks and also for hotels which have had cancelled bookings and the Malls which have lost trade.

There's no cause to deny future Egyptian military flights in-out Thailand if BOTH Egypt and Thailand follow diplomatic and health protocols.

Unless Prayut admits that the Egyptian aircraft flew covertly in-out-in Thailand (hard to argue using a Thai military controlled airbase), such flights should continue as planned.

Tell the good man that a bill is being processed for all the costs and loss of earnings... which will be in the post shortly.

This Incident was a lot more than just ~ not strictly observe Thailands measures to control Covid 19 ~.

It was a flagrant disregard for the Laws of the land and an Insult to the Thai Nation.

Not only should all Egyptian Flights be cancelled ( for ever ), but the Consulate should be asked to close and return to Cairo forthwith.

The Egyptian Embassy is in no way the entity that should 'express regrets'. The Egyptian Foreign Minister and Defence Minister should get on their knees in abject apology.

Express regrets is a limpwristed non-apology. Same as when the apology contains the word 'if'...

Why? What did Egypt do wrong in this situation?

Up to a point a fair comment/question.

On the other hand it's absolutely true that an appropriate Thai authority should be very closely monitoring, minute by minute, whatever aircraft/vessel arrives anywhere in Thailand.

It all went wrong so the monitoring by the responsible Thai authority wasn't active/ competent/successful.

One smaller point that's not getting much comment, the Egyptian soldiers took 2 taxis...

How come nobody queried why the taxis had arrive; and how come nobody (among the Thai authorities on site):

- Didn't stop them from boarding the taxis?

- Didn't properly check the destination of the taxis?

and if it was revealed they were about to depart for Rayong shopping centres, how come someone didn't step in immediately and forcefully block them from leaving?

- Didn't very quickly activate a team of military or whatever personnel to closely monitor their movement to the destination?

- Didn't forcefully stop them/block them from entering the shopping centre?

and ...

It's up to Thai officialdom to ensure that Thai rules and laws are followed.

Obviously if you just wave a bunch of foreign military through immigration, stuff them into a couple of "limos" and wish them a safe journey then there's a possibility they will just do whatever they like for the duration of their stay. You can't then shift all the blame onto them when they do exactly that.
