Yes, I read about that. This is why Thailand does supervised quarantine. They initially allowed self-quarantine and that ended very quickly when it was found returning Thais were going out on the town.

 

An infested returnee from abroad is a ljkely source for resurgence in cases but none of the family identified had traveled, so it would mean community transmission and possibly several   steps or more removed from the index case.

 

Much will depend on whether they can identify the index case.

Absurd overreaction to go back into lockdown. Masks by all means, but not lockdown for a few cases. Much prefer Gladys approach in New South Wales with cases hovering around 10-20 cases per day for the last three weeks.

Reported elsewhere that Adern was considering postponing next month's election, "she said no decision had yet been made on delaying the actual poll, but that she had sought advice about whether it was a viable option."

She has pinned the upcoming election on one thing...managing Covid. No policies....nothing. That was her one task and she failed. The border control that everything was based on is a massive stuff up. People are pouring into the country from infected countries and the control is a shambles with all the gofers managing these people freely moving between the incoming and their families and the wider community. 
There has been total incompetence from the time she was elected that has seen this countries economy nosediving prior to Covid. Currently she is like a true socialist with no accountability throwing money around like a drunken sailor putting this country into debt that is going to overwhelm it. This one task that they could have got right they have stuffed up. The sheep who were all following overnight are waking up to her bull <deleted> and turning against her one offering of be kind.

 

 

 

The above is 100% right  I for one as a kiwi do not trust her and this will not go well for her election chancers I hope the opposition climb into her in a big way

One can only hope, but the opposition has been sadly lacking in resistance and I fear their approach would have been similar.

I disliked Rob Muldoon with a vengeance, but it'd have been salutary to see how he would crush her in parliament.

Regardless of where and how it came it's inevitable that a recurrence happened/ will happen. They need a better plan that imprisoning us every time a schoolboy has a sniffle.

The reaction is totally in line with their strategy. However the weakness in the strategy has been exposed. Fortunately for her they may have caught it in time. Also the fact that it seems its related to the cold store where the first case worked, 3 others who work there now, probably means imported food is fortuitous. That way she can say they will tighten that up and continue on their way until the next breach. Effectively that measn they have to keep the whole infrastructure of testing and tracing on short notice and the public on tenterhooks for ever. I would have hoped that by now the experts would have arrived at more effective responses, but no, we go back to blunt weapons. A lot of countries seem to be living with it a lot better than the complete nanny states of Australia and NZ.

I dont want to bring gender into this, but consider..

this female N.Z prime minister,

and 2 out of 3 worst effected states of Australia run by female premiers.

These decisions really do seem to be born from "emotional" factors.

 

Id like to see how great leaders of the past would have handled this:

say for example Winston Churchill

-cower in fear and lock up the world?

heแ NO!!

 

There has to be some way of drumming this into these decision makers:

 

IF we lockdown 1, 2 or 5 years and we still have Covid lurking?

We have killed ALL our economies, industries, killed countless people from the social problems..

Im only an observer, so the Aussie domestic issues dont bother me so much.

Sweden failed by allowing this into their old folks homes, as did New York, Italy etc.  Take out old folks homes deaths, and stats like these from the Minnesota department of health show that if you are not in a long term care facility, you have a very very low chance of dying from this. 

 

IIRC, there was a grand total of 71 people in Sweden below 50 years of age that dyed from covid.
