New Zealand locks down biggest city after first local cases of coronavirus in 102 days

Yes, I read about that. This is why Thailand does supervised quarantine. They initially allowed self-quarantine and that ended very quickly when it was found returning Thais were going out on the town.

An infested returnee from abroad is a ljkely source for resurgence in cases but none of the family identified had traveled, so it would mean community transmission and possibly several   steps or more removed from the index case.

Much will depend on whether they can identify the index case.

Her country, her call. A three day cautionary stoppage is not the end of the world.

Especially as it will allow the final round of the Super Rugby to be completed on Saturday and Sunday. Especially the Auckland- Canterbury game on Sunday.

If you think it'll stop after 3 days, you are, IMO, dreaming. Bloomfield was on radio saying it depends", IMO code for "you betcha'".

The above is 100% right  I for one as a kiwi do not trust her and this will not go well for her election chancers I hope the opposition climb into her in a big way

One can only hope, but the opposition has been sadly lacking in resistance and I fear their approach would have been similar.

I disliked Rob Muldoon with a vengeance, but it'd have been salutary to see how he would crush her in parliament.

Are you suggesting she is a dictator, or a queen? As long as a semblance of democracy survives it's not "her" country, any more than the other 5 million inhabitants.

Bang on time for latest scare.

So where did it come from if NZ had no infections and have been locked down for for so long?

I suppose next they will be telling us it travels in the atmosphere and descends down on random people in places where there's no covid.

Australia was doing great for so long but suprise suprise Melbourne is hit..  of course, whose airport just happens to be the major hub for Aussie international travel.  Put that down as ticked off the list, to ensure Aussies stay put for well into next year.

Might be a matter of interest also, to watch the few countries left in the world that have no corona.

Who will be suprised if those countries start getting these seemingly "random"  one-off mystery infections in the coming weeks.   Somethings a bit on the nose me thinks.

There were reports that the virus came via imported frozen food. Frozen food was also the possible reason for the Beijing outbreak a month or two ago.

Regardless of where and how it came it's inevitable that a recurrence happened/ will happen. They need a better plan that imprisoning us every time a schoolboy has a sniffle.

I'm all in for the Swedish solution, but that word never leaves her mouth. That would imply that the citizens were not sheeple.

The last time I looked, she is Prime Minister. I surmise that permits her to announce what's going to happen in her country. A bit like johnson who is currently PM for the UK - well, for the immediate future that is, until he gets kicked out next year with his pathetic government.

It is obvious you prefer your own idea instead of listening to experts.

She is the prime minister, acts on what the experts tell her. Perhaps if you are so informed you could be an advisor to her. If not, then your opinion is worth nothing.

The reaction is totally in line with their strategy. However the weakness in the strategy has been exposed. Fortunately for her they may have caught it in time. Also the fact that it seems its related to the cold store where the first case worked, 3 others who work there now, probably means imported food is fortuitous. That way she can say they will tighten that up and continue on their way until the next breach. Effectively that measn they have to keep the whole infrastructure of testing and tracing on short notice and the public on tenterhooks for ever. I would have hoped that by now the experts would have arrived at more effective responses, but no, we go back to blunt weapons. A lot of countries seem to be living with it a lot better than the complete nanny states of Australia and NZ.

What countries are handling better? what would you do?

Well, the Queensland premier has been completely nutty all-throughout.

She has put Q'land back into the dark ages IMO.

The N.S.W prem not much better.

And to think the 2 of em are/were at loggerheads over the border closures. lol

Im sure both of the above would be watching and cheering the N.Z prime minister.

If there is any more breakouts in their duristrictions they will be itching to go one better.

Probably have the sky full of drones making sure no one steps foot outside their houses.

Im only an observer, so the Aussie domestic issues dont bother me so much.

Its the being held prisoner here that i object to.

So obviously the longer they keep all this nonsense up, the longer it will be until they let us fly outbound international again..

Sweden stayed open while other countries locked down — with 5,700 dead, critics are questioning if the gamble went horribly wrong

Id like to see how great leaders of the past would have handled this:

say for example Winston Churchill

-cower in fear and lock up the world?

heแ NO!!

Rob Muldoon ( NZ PM some years ago ) would have had none of this hiding in fear <deleted>. I didn't like him, but he had guts.

Auckland locked down for another 12 days but the general populace ignoring the incompetent government.

People driving, enjoying the sun at beaches etc.

The National opposition party was due to launch their election campaign this weekend in Auckland so Jacinda imposed the shutdown, typical socialist tactic. learnt from her Beijing mates?

Beyond me why people keep bringing this up, when the people involved in Sweden admit they failed.

Sweden failed by allowing this into their old folks homes, as did New York, Italy etc.  Take out old folks homes deaths, and stats like these from the Minnesota department of health show that if you are not in a long term care facility, you have a very very low chance of dying from this.

IIRC, there was a grand total of 71 people in Sweden below 50 years of age that dyed from covid.
